I've tested Vista on my own laptop, and my brother's PC, and both seem to steadily hold that outrageous amount of ram usage. It's just that full of background {censored}...

I believe Vista tend to cache more than XP that's why people get the impression that Vista needs more ram.

But unused ram is useless. You can see the same thing on linux. When a daemon use lot memory for a task, the memory stay reserved when the task is finished and no other software requests memory.

I think 512Mo is plenty enough for basic usage (internet, office), 1gig for intermediate and comfort usage (use of lots of softwares at the same time, gaming...) and 2gig for specific usage (multimedia edition)

You should have 2 gigs at least. One gig is good enough to run it for your basic web surfing but if you do multimedia stuff you should have 2 gigs. I also want to say that you should have at least 256MB video card. Integraded graphics suck on Vista.

Vista will awazs use 50% of avible ram no mater how much ram u have....its to stablize the OS. Its not being used for background {censored}.... Lets say on 1 GIG of ram explore will use aobut 75MB of ram...2 gig of ram and explore will dump 150MB of ram to run it...the more the prosses uses teh mroe stable adn quicker it is

but if u want my opion I have 8GIGS installed for memory and it suck 4 gig on start up..but boy my pc is quick....really quick

oh and alest a 8500 8600 or 8800 Video card should be installed or don;t bother running vista at all....
