You guys are never going to believe this. I had an asus P5WD2 premium 955x chipset loaded with OSX, then the BIOS went south so I ordered a new p5K deluxe. Put the ram and everything on that baby and OS X loads right up. Pretty strange right? So my question is for asap18, can I use the bash that you made even though I don't have the -E and just the regular? I needs me some sound :o thank you again. Chuck

Hi all,

first time posting here and I would like to ask your opinion on this configuration. I need a new PC as a media centre and audio workstation, using Native Instruments applications. I would like to run Ubuntu Studio and Osx86 on it:

Intel S775 Core 2 Q6600 Quad-Core CPU

ASUS S775 P5K-E/WiFi-AP Core 2 Motherboard or Deluxe

DDR2 2GB G.Skill 800MHz PC6400 RAM Kit NR

400GB Seagate 7200rpm 16M Serial ATA HDD

74GB WD Raptor 10000rpm 16MB serial ATA HDD meno

BFG 7900GS 256M PCIe Video Card

LiteOn 20x DVD Writer SATA Black

Integrated Sound Card

Ciao

Aloha Fantomas!

That looks like an excellent setup and afaik it'll run osx just fine, only problem would be the audio out limitation which could mess things up for your "audio workstation". Easily fixed with a (cheap) usb sound card, though, as mentioned.

Good luck! :)

Hi guys,

I've just installed uphuck 1.4i r2 on the machine in my sig. It went on very easily. I had to patch a few kexts to get onboard LAN, jmicron and stereo sound as mentioned earlier in this thread.

Things are generally fine but I have a couple of issues:

1. The fonts look awful. I know OSX renders differently to XP but they look at lot worse than the iMac and MBP I've used at the macstore. Any ideas why? Would the JaS release be better?

2. When booting up, I get the grey apple screen for about 5 seconds and then my monitor goes to sleep for about 25 seconds until the login window comes up. Is that normal?

3. My machine doesn't wake from sleep, same as badge. I gather this is pretty common. I've not tried the paulicat method yet - have you badge?

4. How stable are hackintoshes? Can you run it as your main machine (I want to)? The only error I've had so far is when I ran geekbench. At the end of the bench, it just dissappeared. When I tried to bring up the activity monitor, my machine went to sleep. As per 3, it doesn't wake up and so I had to reset. The second time I ran, it worked fine. Just a glitch or something more serious?

Ultimately, if I can get reasonable answers to these questions I would like to use OSX as my main machine and that means a lot of photography processing. Do people generally think that a hackintosh is good enough for that?

That's odd, show us a screenshot. Mine look fine IMO. No idea why, i don't think another release would fix it.

My monitor goes to sleep for a moment, and then the login window comes up. It's not for that long though. Maybe another release would fix that...

BTW. I answered your "Is it stable?" question in your other thread. In a word: yes.

•I have not tried anything to get sleep to work, let me know if you have any luck.

•I use my hack as my main machine, no problems so far (except the ones i caused). It's rock solid.

•My display does cycle during boot, but definitely doesn't sit there for 25 seconds on boot, I'd estimate it at around 5-7 secs.

Synaesthesia - I'll try and grab a screenshot tonight.

badge - I was going to have a look around and see what success Paulicat had. If I get anywhere, I'll let you know.

thanks for the stability tips, it gives me more confidence to use it as my main OS. You haven't had any issues with installing other software? Have you tried VMWare fusion? I installed the MS Remote Desktop beta last night and had a few problems with that. The installer bombed out 1st time but then was ok the 2nd. I ran it for a bit and then when I exited, I got the 'application unexpectedly quit' message. And then everything I tried to close (mail, camino, safari, adobe lightroom, finder + task monitor) all said the same thing. however, I did use the Disk Utility -> Repair Permissions without rebooting. Maybe it was that. After I rebooted, everything seemed ok. I don't know, hopefully it was just me + the permissions.

the monitor cycling is weird. it doesn't seem to be doing anything really. the hdd isn't being accessed or anything, it literally just sits there doing nothing for 25 secs and then the login window pops up. apart from that, it is extremely quick and responsive. well, you can see my benchmarks. badge - have you run any benches on your setup for comparison?

cheers

Matt

Is there a specific 10.4.9 version I need to install on P35s?

Cheers

Fant0maS - I used the uphuck 1.4i r2 DVD and it went straight on without any problems. my system is pretty close to what you're going to buy, apart from the CPU.

Let me know how your benchmarks work out with the quad. I was going to go for it but the E6750 running at 1333 was about £50 ($100) cheaper here in the UK and I decided that I wouldn't see much of a real world benefit as most apps won't take advantage of the 4 cores. I decided to wait until Intel release a proper quad core @45nm later in the year/early next. I do use lightroom and CS3 though and I think they will both take advantage of the quad. It was a close call.

I can buy the Q6600 for almost the same price, and using all audio apps I need that extra power. Once I get the system going I will post some benchmarks, but I am sure I will need some help before then.

:) , I have betrayed all of you, and exchanged my P5K-E for the Deluxe as well as a Q6600. P5K-Deluxe has exact same parts 'cept a extra Marvell LAN (that works out of box ;) ). BTW, my sleep works fine out of box.

In your sig you have leopard installed. do you have tiger installed also? Does sleep work there too?

Sleep working? thas nice, someone else did NOT get it to work on the deluxe.

But i guess its also part of the settings etc.

in the same post you can read how he got the wireless to work as well!!

Do i just have to install unix realtek drivers?

guys, here is a screenshot with my latest geekbench. I've overclocked to 3.2Ghz. I don't understand why my memory is being detected as 667. It's 800. CPU-Z says 800 but Windows also says 667. Any ideas?

do the fonts look 'normal' to you? is it just the switch from XP to OSX that is making me think there is something not right?

I noticed as well that when I hover the cursor over certain things, like the corner of an app, it doesn't always change until I actually click where I'm hovering. is that normal ?

sometimes fonts can just simply look bad. depends on your monitor above all else really. fonts can be a real bugger, so I suggest you either learn to deal with it or set aside 5 hours to get it right yourself ;).

get it right myself?

it's normal that the fonts look almost slightly blurred? I was sure when I've looked at the iMacs and MBPs at the local mac store the fonts were sharper. btw, the dell monitor I've got actually has the same panel as the ACD, so it should be very good. In the reviews I've seen of it, it compares very well with the ACD.

My setup does the same thing at poweron - monitor blank for 25 secs or so, then all is good. Using a 7600GT with dual DVI out - same for both outputs.

^_^ Hi Everybody!

I installed uphuck 1.4i R2 on my Abit IP35 Pro mainboard with a Q6600.

There are some odd things happening.

The Jmicron JMB36X controller is in AHCI mode, but does not show the attached drive, even though the drive shows under Vista on the same computer.

No devices that are plugged into the PCI slots show up in "About This Mac...

The Intel ICH9R controller is in AHCI mode, and the drive performance part of Xbench shows that there is some issue with the hardrive speed (slower than it should be).

The computer is setup for S3 sleep but will not wake up, although it does wake when it is in Vista.

The PS2 keyboard does not work, and when I tried to add the PS2 driver to the selections I made during setup I encountered a kernel panic, after the computer restarted during setup, so I had to remove the PS2 driver option from my selections during setup and then use a USB keyboard and mouse.

USB and firewire do seem to work though.

Are there drivers for the ICH9R, the JMB36X, and the sleep or power managment function?
