I just got an email from Vmware announcing beta 3 of Fusion. I'm lazy so I'll cut and paste the email:

We are pleased to announce the release of VMware Fusion™ Beta 3, the easiest and most complete way to run any PC application your Mac—without rebooting.

Based on feedback from users like you, we've made scores of improvements that make VMware Fusion faster, more reliable and even easier to use.

What's New and Improved with VMware Fusion Beta 3

* Improved performance: You now have the option of turning off debugging features in VMware Fusion to enjoy even better performance.

* Support for Boot Camp: You no longer have to choose between Windows or Mac—run Windows XP side-by-side with Mac OS X off your existing Boot Camp partition.

* Windows Easy Install: Just answer a few simple questions, insert your Windows CD, and VMware Fusion will automatically create a Windows virtual machine that is optimized for your Mac.

* Virtual machine packages: Virtual machines are now encapsulated in a single, easy-to-manage package. Move your virtual machines to another hard drive or Mac simply by copying a file.

* Enhanced virtual machine management: Managing multiple virtual machines and changing virtual machine settings is even easier with the Virtual Machine Library.

* Improved international support: European and Japanese Apple keyboards now work properly in virtual machines.

This is great. Fusion has been the only VM software I can run Ubuntu 7.04 on, since Parallels has some kind of incompatible virtual CD drive. It ran like {censored} because of the debugging stuff; it's nice to know I can turn that off now. :)

Hm, I wonder if they support Vista Boot Camp installs?

UPDATE: Vista Home Premium boots from my Boot Camp partition! Unfortunately, the keyboard is utterly refusing to work at the login screen. I'm going to restart and see if it fixes anything.

Well, it boots up fine. However, no Aero (yet...) and it's asking me to reactivate. I'm not sure if I want to chance doing that, though...

This is a big advancement, since we're technically not even allowed to boot Home Premium in a VM in the first place.

Yeah, I have problems in Parallels with some of my VMs that I run perfectly on VMware, even Windows 98.

I don't think we're going to get Aero anytime soon. VMware provides a "SVGA" driver, but even with the experimental "Accelerated 3D Graphics" it's not enough for Aero.

I still don't know if I should re-activate Vista in the VM, since it might break my Boot Camp native install. Anyone got any ideas?

Well, I tried but it's demanding that I provide another product key. I might be stuck here, unless the "Automated phone service" can give me anything.

You had me at better performance, VMware runs like {censored} on my hackintosh compared to parallels

Agree!

..just tried with xp pro...noway!

no challenge vs parallesl..a lot of time to start,resume,installing..

I think for the moment , at least on my hackintosh ,the paralles wins hands down.

On Linux and win32 , about virtualization , it's a different story..

Finally...Vmware is starting to feel usable on a OSX host now. The previous versions were as fast as pond water on my Hackintosh. This newer version runs significantly faster with debugging checks disabled...still not as fast as Parallels though.

@ favalessa

I completely agree....on Linux, VMware runs quite well. It feels like near native speed.

No more VMWare for me until they have all their "top features" fixed on a real FINAL release. I'm all joy with Parallels and its speed and stability and it doesn't screw my OS X bootup times like the {censored} VMware loads on bootup.

But if they finally get 100% Virtual 3D support with native GPU acceleration (and a faster VT-X implementation) AND if they finally fix their flaky configuration, I'll be sold.

I really don't find the point of booting another *NIX/Linux OS under virtualization when you already have OS X. I'm no developer so getting some stuff off/into windows and running some apps in WinXPSP2 using Parallels is already perfect for me. They just need full 3d App support.

VMWare=exciting, customizable, slow, buggy

Parallels=boring, easy to use, fast, stable

VMware still has a place in virtualization, but IMHO, in the small time that Parallels was developed into a fully-featured product their software's comparatively really slow in development. It wouldn't surprise me if they stopped workstation development and focus on ESX Server development which IMHO, is much more their "cup of tea".

I already have *NIX with GCC and X11 in OS X, next on the "needs" list are Windows-only apps that Parallels have completely made functional for me. And with full VT-X support, I even boot it faster under Parallels than native. Insanely wierd, but true.

I'm not flaming VMWare Beta 3, if they have full DX8.1/9 support in the future and is as fast and stable as Parallels, then I'd be sold. For now, no more VMWare Betas for me, I like my bootup clean.

Installed it this morning and just uninstalled Parallels.

Better performance/debugging disabled + BootCamp partition support = win for me. It handles my old 2D games better than Parallels (which likes to run choppy and wiggle the CPU speed around), and it doesn't take a million years to unmount the Windows partition and boot up, and seems to have lower overhead.

VMware Fusion has gotten better with each release, I'm really happy with it so far.

Same issue as the previous beta: serial is not accepted. Mmh maybe it's about the Italian language? I read something around the official forum but I've still to give it a try. Which language do you use as default?

I have no problem with serial it accept my previous one I don't need anything to fill.

I see that it is faster than Paralles in certain things. My huge excel spreadsheet not only load faster but preform operation faster (is more snappier when I scroll). My another program loads huge amount of catalogs and prices much faster than Paralles. When I look at Monitor Vmware give smaller overhead on my system in idle and when I am working
