Motherboard needs to be able to initialize the video card. The bios on an old Mac card is not compatible with generic PC bios. Though, if the card is a 7000 or similar, you can flash the card with a pc bios and use it that way ( may or may not work, depending on the card and the size of the flash ram available on the VGA card's bios )... Search the web for "Strange Dogs" and 7000... oh, here's the link:

true... some of the early 7000s and Geforce cards were capable of both, till they figured out they could charge Mac users five times more, and made the ROMs smaller so that only the PC ROM would fit. So, yeah, best stick with the PC versions, they'd be cheaper anyway.
