Furious_Red
hey all i'm looking for info on specific parts to build my "super hackintosh" as the guy in the store put it. don't really care about the money but i want parts that with little tweaking will give me full features. i don't want to spend as many hours on it as i did for my lappy. any and all info would be great, looking for the best of everything thats mostly compatable. frizbot
Uh huh. Lots of threads available. Bad Axe 2 motherboard Intel Xeon processor (rebadged Core 2 Duo) 2 or 4gb overclocker RAM (in 2x2gb if you can find it) GeForce 7600GT or maybe something higher in the 7xxx series, check compatibility. Expensive case, like Antec or Lian Li Quality PSU, like Enermax or Antec, etc. Proper cooling by Thermalright, Zalman, etc. Monitor. Dance. EtherealRemnant
You don't need to shell out the extra cash on the Xeon... get a regular Core 2 Duo. There is no proof that the Xeons are any better than stock Core 2s. Video card depends on your needs but everything in the 7xxx series minus the 7950s work great. An expensive case is up to you. But ENERMAX is NOT a quality PSU! Antec or Thermaltake! Cooling... well if you want the best, get a Tuniq Tower but that thing is HUGE. munky
of course, you can run multiple Xeons if you get a suitable mobo, whereas regular Core 2 Duos wont run in multiprocessor configuration. Ferret-Simpson
Twin or Quad 4Core Xeons for example. That's 8 or 16 cores. The 8 core versions have been tested as working, I haven't seen a Quad-chip board in a year or two, but they're probably available. aberracus
Keep us posted if the 7950 256 mb works... it woul;d be awesome i will recomend now the ASUS P%WDH DELUXE, is a super mobo, HIGLY overclockeable, native support for 2 lan card on board, and Wifi onboard!, Audio HD works perfect in and out, Sata is now working properly, if we get the remote to work, it will be a perfect mac clone. frizbot
EtherialRemnant, I was told that the Xeon Core2Duo processors could overclock more easily. I have no evidence for that, and I'm looking it up. Anyone have experience with this? I believe Enermax and Antec offer quality hardware. Having looked at Thermaltake cases and cooling, I've found that they are often ineffective and overpriced, relying on image. It's my experience. For cooling, Thermalright, Scythe, Zalman, etc have been effective for me without generating much noise. When I recommended an expensive case, I mean something quality rather than <40$, as it'll include features like 120mm fan spaces, EMI shields, smoothed edges (rather than just punched steel), etc. I didn't give very exact tips since there's tons of hardware info available. frizbot
There appears to be little difference between the C2D and C2D Xeon. I'm downgrading the 3050 recommendation to the E6300; it's the same technology, it's overclockable, and it's quite a bit cheaper -- money than can be spent on better cooling.
