I recently dual booted my MBP to use OS X and Vista. In OS X, the comp runs perfectly fine. In Vista, however, the computer emits this very high pitched whine. What is Vista doing with the processor that Mac isn't? I've taken my MBP for repairs because of whining (in OS X) twice before, so I'm in no rush to truck out there again. Is anyone else having this problem?

I hope that it isn't the fan, as I am on my third one. (I got the most recent 2 weeks ago.)

I'm not sure how to check the screen frequency, so if you know how, could you please instruct me?

Is anyone else using Vista on a MBP? Do you have this problem as well, or is it a case of isolated incidents?

I have the same problem... scrolling relieves it, hehe. I think this is the same issues they had in osx earlier too, but they probably fixed it in software. to bad they havent done it in vista yet.

EDIT: I just found out what it was, I was using my headphones, when I pulled them out it stopped. So I started playing a little with the sigmatel settings. I found that if you enable the Power Saving stuff there the whining starts again. So apparently it whines when you enable power savings or use headphones. I'm guessing its a driver issue..

I've tried every damn driver I've come across for the sigmatel HD thingy now, and none work except the ones on the boot camp cd. That one has the whine when I insert headphones or turn on power savings though. Where do I file a bug on this, so Apple can fix it in the next bootcamp release?

Hi bushwakko,

I have the same problem and thanks for finding out the Sigmatel thingy.

However, I am wondering why this has to do with the sound card because it seems like the same whining problem as before.

I have a C2D 15" and the whining is very light; it is noticeable only when I am working late at night.

The whining goes away as long as I play some video. Also it will go away for about 2 seconds if I click some folder in Windows Explorer.

In short, when CPU is idle, it whines, but I think it is not as loud as the earlier model.

But now I can confirm that the disabling the Sigmatel power saving mode also make the whining go away.

Weird! I don't have how much power the sound card is drawing, but I think it is worth it. The whining isn't that loud but still noticeable and annoying at night.

it isn't fan whine. it's something else that whines when under low load when the sound chip is enabled. if you uninstall the sound driver the whine goes away all together, so i'm guessing that the sound driver needs to be tuned. It's probably why there is no whine in osx.

My CRT monitor makes a high pitched whine quite often. It's irritating but you get used to it.

When I had a laptop, (I only had Windows XP on it) if you connected it to external speakers you'd get a low buzz which changed depending on CPU load. You could tell when it was up to something because it would buzz loads.

@bushwakko: so how much runtime do you get out of your battery using vista? I am curious because under WinXP i dont have the whine, the soundcard settings dont have any energy saving options and i only get ~2h out of the battery. I suspect that the whine is related to some CPU sleep state which cannot be reached under XP at all.
