StayingOccupied
EDIT-- Please read my latest post. This post here is being left for reference. Ok. I have put together all the parts I am going to use for my OSx86 machine. I'm going to want to dual boot windows xp sp2 and JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3. First off, these are the parts i selected. Are they all supported? I've done a combination of searching these forums and using the wiki to select these. CD/DVD Burner SAMSUNG 18X DVD±R DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM Write, LightScribe Technology Black SATA Model SH-S183L - OEM Case/PSU COOLER MASTER Centurion RC-534-SKR5 Silver Aluminum & Mesh bezel, SECC chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 430W Power Supply - Retail HDD SAMSUNG SpinPoint T Series HD501LJ 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM Wireless NETGEAR WG311T PCI Wireless Adapter - Retail Video Card XFX PV-T71G-UCE7 GeForce 7900GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - OEM Memory/RAM G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ - Retail Mother Board Intel BLKD975XBX2KR LGA 775 Intel 975X ATX Intel Motherboard - OEM Processor Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6600 - Retail Also, is there anything that i have that you would suggest i get something else? RAM type, video card manufacturer. Also, just to get it out of the way now: After i put this together, should i install XP first? Then partition and install OSX? (i want to dual boot) I have a SATA HD and DVD drive selected, will thise work to install OSX? Would it be better to just get 2 smaller HD's and install each OS on their own drive? or does it not matter? How big do i make the partitions? Should i just use partition magic once i install XP? I have JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3, am i going to need anything else to get the rest of this stuff to work? I know i read 'titan' or some other term i didnt recognize. I know i have more questions, so i'll ask them when i remember. Until then, thanks in advance anybody who takes the time to read this and help me. Schweppes
Looks like a great Hackintosh!!!! TOTAL 1103 (u$s ? ) Where are you from? I suggest to use DiskPart method to create OS X partition...look inside the tutorials for this. I think is better if you buy 2 HDDs smaller instead of only a 500 GB HDD. StayingOccupied
I"m also getting a 19" lcd, to go along with my 19" one i already have. I'm from Michigan, near detroit, if thats what youre asking. I think I am going to get 2 200GB drives. Both SATA. Will i be able to boot all this with SATA HDs and DVD drive? Will i still need to partition? Now i'm going to read about the DiskPart method. Thanks for your help. Has anybody used this MOBO? I looked on the hardware list, and i cant decipher if this one is on there or not. lol. hecker
You should definitely get SuperDuper! It's an excellent free tool for backup up your OSX after it's running. It can create bootable sparse images (dynamic image files) and you don't need to boot from another media to do it. It saved my rear many times while I was installing my new system. Cheers, hecker Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/40926-building-new-machine-did-i-make-a-mistake-yet/#findComment-292577 Share on other sites

StayingOccupied
Thanks guys. I got gparted, and will get SuperDuper when i put osx on the machine. Should i put each OS on its own hard drive? Orea
I would put Both OS's on one drive, and then your documents on the HD, but make sure you format it to FAT or FAT32 to allow OSX and Windows to read it. Ferret-Simpson
But be warned, fat32 has a max 4GB filesize limit. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/40926-building-new-machine-did-i-make-a-mistake-yet/#findComment-292716 Share on other sites
StayingOccupied
But be warned, fat32 has a max 4GB filesize limit. So i should make it FAT, or isnt there another choice? Fat logical, or something like that? B/C i definately want bigger file sizes to be allowed on. StayingOccupied
OK i got all the parts in today, save the GFX card, that'll be here tomorrow. Dual boot XP and OSx86 Here are some questions i have. 1. When i install XP, how big can i make the partition? I have 1-200GB and 1-400GB drive. Can i divide the 200GB drive into 2 partitions, both 100GB? I read somewhere that to be bootable they had the OS had to be in the front of the drive, is this true? Or can i do it the way i wanted? 2. What else will i need for the hardware i selected? I read about Titan or Natit, will i need either of those? Any other things like that to get it initially working? 3. My DVD drive is SATA so is the HD, will these both work 'out of the box' to install OSx86? 4. I have JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3, is this the latest and best? Is there a different one i should get for my system? Stellair
1. what do you mean by 'in the front'??? Your OSX partition can be anywhere on the disk... 2. the only thing I can say is that you test different versions of Macosx and see what is better for you. And if it doesn't work install it with help from titan or natit tool. 3. the sata HD will be no problem normally but the sata drive I don't know (never red anything on it or tried) 4. there's a JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3.PPF1 included version on the demon :-) I think that it's the latest Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/40926-building-new-machine-did-i-make-a-mistake-yet/#findComment-297071 Share on other sites

Make sure the partition designated for OS X starts below the 1024 boundary." from the wiki. Ferret-Simpson
This may have been from an older version of OS X. The latest revisions don't seem to have these issues, at least not on my machine. I would reccomend trying to use the latest OS X if you can, because it'll save trying to upgrade later, and allows the easiest support for new hardware. Only disadvantage is certain kernel bugs, but these are improving steadily, and new kernels can be installed without issue. StayingOccupied
Thanks. I downloaded the PPF patch for the 10.4.8 intel/amd sse3/sse2 image i had and patched it. I want to install SSE3, right? Does this disc give me a choice? I havent started installing yet because i'm still waiting for that GFX to arrive. How should i format the 400GB drive? If i format it in osx, and get that macdrive 6 addawan was talking about, will that let me use the disk regularly with both OS's? I will be using OSX mainly.
