SteveStar
Hey My question: Is it possible to have one windows installation (partition) on your hd which you can use with Parallels desktop but also with bootcamp? So for example at startup you choose for OSX (in bootcamp) and then when you are running OSX you start up parallels and you run windows within OSX. Is this possible? thnx Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/40727-share-one-windows-installation-with-bootcamp-and-parallels-desktop/ Share on other sites
exscape
Yes, if you use one of the newer versions of Parallels this is supported. Don't even bother using an old pirated copy though. errandwolfe
It is possible but you really don't want to do this yet. There have been a lot of problems utilizing the BootCamp partition. These are expected to be fixed by the time the RTM is released, but it simply is not stable enough even in the latest beta. I agree , here is my experience booting parallels with my bootcamp partition .... AirmanPika
I agree , here is my experience booting parallels with my bootcamp partition .... It would be nice if they'd support a windows partition and not just bootcamp created partitions. I don't use bootcamp to dual boot my macs. dragonpool
It's better not to run Windows on Bootcamp partition in Parallels, especially if you are going to do some serious work in Windows. The problem is not that Parallels cannot run Windows in Bootcamp, it's that some operations (you are aware of or not aware of) in Windows running in Parallels may make critical changes in the system so that you will never be able to run the Windows natively, and vice versa. macgirl
Well... no, I noticed that Parallels use a different entry in the boot loader menu, very different options (to keep it's own drivers and doesn't affect the "native" installation). Here is how boot.ini is modified. [boot loader] timeout=1 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Parallels configuration" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptOut multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /kernel=ntkopvs_.exe /hal=halopvs_.dll Once Parallels release&unmounts the disk boot.ini back to prevoious state: [boot loader] timeout=1 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect Also I converted my VMware Image of XP running in Parallels does not make the modification of the boot.ini since it isn't a BootCamp disk.
