rollcage
Sources indicated to MacScoop that Apple is readying the launch of renewed Mac Pro and Cinema Display line-ups in January. The new Mac Pro configuration will feature two of the recently announced Quad-core Intel (more likely Xeon) processors for a total of eight cores per configuration. It's possible that Apple will also keep a four core MacPro configuration in the line-up thereby providing a lower-priced model, sources told MacScoop. The release of the new Mac ro could coincide with the long awaited renewal of Apple's Cinema Display line-up. Apple hasn't made any major update to the Cinema Displays since their initial release in June 2004. As reported by MacScoop a few days ago, the next generation of Apple Cinema Displays could feature a built-in iSight, HDMI connectivity as well as support for HDCP. New sizes could appear in the line-up: the 23 inch model may be replaced by a 24 inch one while a larger model may broaden the line-up. Sources expect the new Mac Pro and the new Cinema Displays to arrive anytime in January but added that the products are very likely to be released during MacWorld SF's opening keynote. trav1085
That may explain why iSight has been missing on the Apple Store. Would that be HD iSight as well? rollcage
That may explain why iSight has been missing on the Apple Store. Would that be HD iSight as well? Well I hope that they keep iSight as a separate product too, maybe they're just updating it? There's a big difference in $120 compared to $600 for a web cam. I don't know if it will be HD iSight, but I would assume that it might. Maybe someone else has more info on that. Alessandro17
Good news. I hope they realize they can't sell a dual quad workstation with 1 gb RAM! I also hope they really make available a cheaper four core Mac Pro , that could be the first step towards what many of us want: an affordable, upgradeable workstation. Alessandro17
Another possible advantage: it could become possible to buy refurbished first generation Intel Mac Pros for a good price. rollcage
Only thing I can't figure out is what's the point? Most of today's apps can barely make use of two cores, eight cores is going to be worse. I really don't think that most people would buy this system, they'll probably opt for a hopefully cheaper four core system. Alessandro17
what about using more than one app ata a time? You get pretty good multithreading even with two cores. 4 should be more than enough. 8 is definitely overkill. On the other hand such a computer should be future-proof for quite a number of years, which is a good thing considering the high cost of a Mac Pro (and especially upgrades) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/37241-8-core-mac-pro-and-new-displays-slated-for-january/#findComment-265206 Share on other sites

I've never heard those two words used in the same sentence before... because in my understanding, an affordable workstation would be merely a desktop... asap18
clovertowns are hardly in supply at the moment, i expect at leopard time that apple will update the mac pro. However i agree that the displays will be updated. More likely the mac pros will updated though if not during march at wwdc, along with xserves. It depends on your idea of affordable. Do a bit of googling. You could find this, for instance: http://www.hp.com/sbso/busproducts-workstations.html or this: http://www.mce.com/shop/product_detail/pro...ategory_id=1112 Happy googling... "Affordable" for me as a full-time CAE user is about 6-7k... Most of my colleagues say 10k is reasonable (as I'm currently in the market for one) I'm glad to see workstations as powerful as the personal P4 I'm replacing still retailing... You really expect to buy something that cheap and upgrade it? You're obviously looking in the wrong class for a computer. Take a look at the details for those machines... I'm no expert by any means, but you can't be serious?
