ancient, i know, but i consider that part of the charm.

my laptop is a lenovo ideapad y530 (upgraded specs so the ram is slightly better and so is the CPU)

I'm a newb so if you need absolutely anything else, ask :P
(speaking of newb, can someone tell me how to get rid   ^ of that stupid image emoticon?)

edit: no longer just about ideneb cuz me noob

Have you checked out the old threads on this site about iDeneb?

https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/179654-ideneb-v16-1058-lite-edition/

couldn't find the problem

realised my post isn't that descriptive, so here's it: when i boot from the USB i put iDeneb in, it's just a black screen for a second then it resets, if there's an error i can't tell cuz the backlight on this laptop is dying. (might be able to tell if there's one, but the text itself will be almost unreadable without a flashlight) i'm using a CPU that's a core 2 duo, so i don't see any reason for it to fail that catastrophically

edit: actually, the black screen and reset problem is probably the outcome of a seperate windows problem i'm having, which means while the laptop sees the USB as a boot device, it skips to the harddrive instead

oopsies

How did you restore to the USB? It's possible that the boot sector wasn't copied. Boot the USB from BIOS and immediately spam F8. If it's on there then it'll show the Chameleon bootloader. If that works type -f -x -v and cross your fingers. This will boot it in safe boot ignoring the caches and show verbose to help diagnose any issues when booting.

one of my friends already suggested using a different method for the same reason (i usually use ultraISO, they suggested balena etcher), so i'm gonna test with that.
on an unrelated note, i'm gonna test with ideneb 1.3 instead because it has a bit more documentation (and michael MJD used it so it must be good! :D)

soo balena etcher REALLY does not like the ideneb 1.3 iso, so i'll probably test it with ultraiso first, and then write with rufus if any issues appear

edit: apparently every program hates my iDeneb 1.3 ISO, so i'll try 1.6 again

i was attempting to go back to ideneb 1.6 instead, but.. uh....image.png.e3ea62aabfcf78e5bef02ca10cfb464d.png

gonna test a different distro instead (friend suggested iATKOS (the version before they paywalled everything), so i'll test that)

Restore the ISO to a USB using TransMac. It has a free trial. That "should" work. Other option is to get a macOS VM and restore the iso to a USB using Disk Utility.

i attempted using transmac and i couldn't find any options that restore to USB, will try though (a lot of the distros have DMG images)

Right click the USB on the left and choose restore with disk image.

this didn't work 😧

just boots to hard disk as usual (and yes i was entering the boot menu to select the USB pendrive and my bios is so locked down the only useful setting i can change is the disk mode, which is in AHCI)

(seriously, how do i get rid of that image emotion??? )

Two options then for a legacy install. Restore to usb using Disk Utility on macOS (can be a VM). Or use a DVD. I remember using a DVD of SL and nawcoms mod cd when I first started.

As for the emojis. You can put a space inbetween so they don't show...  : P
