If there is any truth in that article, a hackintosh with a slightly overclocked Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 should easily outperform the most powerful Mac Pro.

Therefore I am afraid that what many of us hope for, a mid-range Mac desktop with a Core 2 Duo will not become reality, unless Apple can double the Mac Pros' performance (with Core 2 Quads, for instance?)

a mid-range Mac desktop with a Core 2 Duo

the iMac is there for a reason. Mac Pro is designed for professionals who need workstation level performance on their Mac's. the iMac is designed to be a consumer level computer that is fairly affordable and performs well enough for almost everything. Apple is all about streamlining their product lines and not offering products that overlap in price and performance range. That has always been Apple's philosophy.

Doesn't stability count at all? :D

My hackintosh is *very* stable :D

Trouble is, many of us come from Windows, and quite a few of us from Linux as well.

As a consequence we know only desktops and laptops.

How would you classify an iMac?

But regardless, I want a real desktop, meaning I don't want something which only comes with a screen. Besides I want something which can be easily upgraded. Something like the Mac Pro, with other words, but with less expensive and more mainstream components.

I mentioned this over at Geek Patrol, but I think it bears repeating here.

Geekbench runs tests both in single-threaded mode (where it runs on just one core) and multi-threaded more (where it runs on all cores), so doubling the number of cores won’t double the overall score.

Plus, Geekbench also tests memory performance, which is an area where performance is about the same on the Core 2 Duo and the Mac Pro (i.e., it’s not affected by the number of available cores).

As a consequence we know only desktops and laptops.

...

Seriously?

A'ight, an iMac should be right up your alley then, as it comes with these wonderful components like a motherboard, RAM, a hard drive, a graphics card, and all the rest of the components that make up a computer!

Too bad Apple's too stupid to make something like that. But again, as it's been said a million times, it's a niche market. A *really* niche market. And not too many people would be into it.

We need, like, the cube, reinvented, know what I mean? The cube was awesome. It was so easily upgradeable. Damn Apple and their stupid discontinuation into Mac Mini. :D

OK, my bad, English is not my mother tongue after all. I meant that a proper desktop doesn't come with a screen built in: what if I have my own or if I want to buy a different one?

sorry for offtop, but i need to say all this ... =))

i totally agree with Alessandro17

i like macs. better to say - a like apple.

but there is no mac for me at moment!

i have ACD 23" and it's great, and it will be great for a 5 years still, maybe even more, but any hardware will be grow old throught a year-two, not more!

that is why i don't like iMac and i'll never buy it...... what will i do with 24" screen of top iMac? when new intel hundred cores processors will out ??? (just supposition), my top iMac will be good only for my grandma throught a little years, but my screen still will be great (as said lostgame)

and i doesn't need MAC PRO.

i doesn't need all this 8 slots of FB-DDR, i know what i'll never use more than 4.

and i doesn't need 4 HDD's , 2 is more than enought for me....

and 2 xeons... . .. . core 2 duo 2Ghz is more than enought again ...

so mid-range Mac will be good for any work.

for a lot of professionals.

only HARD PRO graphics/3D/video professionals .... very PRO need this powerfull of mac pro...

i know a lot of professoinals who works on their old G4's, G5's also on G4 powerbooks...

and they too don't need all this power of new MAC PRO.

and a lot of them have good screens, like eizo, la cie, pro nec's

noone of them doesn't like iMac, like i'm too.

and all of them doesn't need this extremely powefull Mac pro...

noone of them don't ready to pay for all this extra features, which whey will not use...

don't forget - they are PRO's. they work on macs everyday... and they know what they need

also everyone, who works with music, doesn's need so much power too !

4 gb of memory + core 2 duo is MORE THAN ENOUGHT again, for ANY MUSIC WORK !!! FOR ANY !!!!

and for what all this people must pay for MAC PRO ??

and i told with confidence what a lot of people all over the world wait for a MID-RANGE MAC TOWER...

Oh yes, music, but you can do music form a Mac Book Pro, and some serious external raid Hdisks, in music almost everything is outside of the computer, so yes yo can go with an Imac 24 with 4GBs inside (And Core Duo 2) or a Mac book Pro with 4 gbs and c2d, so.... really the mid tower is an overlapp, with no real market for it in apple way of viewing their clients.

Apple wants to be like a ferrari, you have to see the sexy curves and feel the power under the hood without knowing anything about cars and mechanics.

And who says only 3D designers from Industrial light and magic needs Mac Pros? Mac pros ARE the Pro computer wich can be upgraded easily, what you are asking for already exist, and they arent overpriced nor overpowered. I allready know a bunch of designers and audio artists and video producers who have or will love to have a Mac Pro, as i said before is the ferrari of the computers. BTW video production isntead of 3D design is the main core or application of choice of the Mac Pros, the second place is for music editing and recording, and science field research is another big on apple.... And ANYONE who is working with a G4 for video production will die to have a Mac Pro, and most of the G5 owners would happily upgrade if they havent been late adopters.

There will never be an Apple miniTower, what you are asking for is a Mac mini not soo mini with upgreadable video and a little more space to HDs.... who is the target for that?

analyzing:

Apple Tower:

Now in the market!

1. You can plug any screen you want! (apple losses money here)

2. You can OPEN IT and change hard disks at will ! (for a consumer PC its againt apple philosophy of controlling wich components go in and wich component dont, just to keep things ging smooth at least)

3. You can upgrade your ram! (dooh!)

4. You can upgrade your video card! (why would you want to do that? you are just a consumer for home computer, when you brought your apple you could have decided with wich card your machine will go from a short but consumer oriented list of cards, and if you want more power, sell it or give it to your kids and BUY ANOTHER MORE POWERFULL IMAC) Dont forget Apple computers are the compuers with more aftermaket value.

So do you think apple makes computers for the so called gamer/enthusiast market?

NOO!

they dont want too right now

Maybe in the future ,, but they dont have GAMES (mostly) so who are their target?

If you want a powerfull computer go get a powerful imac and get some extra externals Hds if you need the space, you dont really need anything more for making music.

just my two cents hehe

as i post early i will never buy imac because of build-in screen !

iMac is a multimedia - home computer.

it's not a PRO.

and MAC PRO is tooooooo PRO.

my hackintosh is better VS iMac 24" for me.

i have used an iMac 24" some.. and i don't like it .. i don't like it at aLL.

but i just LOVE my ACD .. it's great , and sure MAC PRO great too, but it's toooo expensive, especially n my counry ($3k+ for 2.66 Ghz model) this is the main and only one reason, why i, and not only i once need a middle range mac....

adn why apple switch to Intel ?? because they want to ENCREASE SHARE OF MARKET !!! they want to sell more apples all over the world !

and they got what they need - share grow up to 30% !!!

why they now planning to build AMD's mac s - again share grow, for amd fans.

for comprassion - everyone love ferrari, but how much people have ? most of people will be glad to have smthng like new bmw 3series coupe, it's cool, it's fast, etc,etc ..

and millions of bmw's runs all over the world, and how much ferrari's ????

have you seen a man, who repair it's new bmw in own garage ??? i think NOT !! it's not Ferrari, but it's still great car

I don't think anyone's listenning to anyone else in this thread...seriously people, read the points made by others!

Yes, we got it, a few of you want mid-range towers.

But you should get it that you are enthusiasts or gamers, as aberracus said, and these are not markets that Apple is pursuing.

Also, boo, you said they increased their market share to 30%. Needless to say, this is false. Apple is currently at about 6% in the US market, and i think about 4% worldwide, but don't quote me. Still, 30 percent is nowhere near Apple!

Finally, those of you using osx86/hackintoshes and who like installing your own OS on a custom-build computer, no mater it's uses, are not who Apple is looking for. They want a closed system. And BMW is like ferrari. So is Mercedes, and a whole bunch of other car makers. Because they offer you more than a great car ride in style, they offer you luxury, which is why Apple is like them.

Still, 30 percent is nowhere near Apple!

i said about their encerease !!

sure they havn't 30% of market nowhere

i said they encrease own share for 30%...

they have 3% , + 30% = over 4%...

it's a big encrease for a one year !!!

Hmm, well, Apple makes two desktop systems without monitors: the Mac mini and the Mac Pro. The mini is for people who just need a computer for general day to day use, the Pro is for professionals and for people who want to be able to easily upgrade the system. Apple has (almost) always made an "all-in-one" computer/monitor since the introduction of the Lisa, and right now, that is the iMac, which happens to fall right in between the mini and the Pro as far as features and performance. There is, however, nothing you can do with an iMac that you can't do with a mini (other than the few Mac games out there that require the higher performance graphics card).

Hmm, well, Apple makes two desktop systems without monitors: the Mac mini and the Mac Pro.

Two extremes. From the *very* basic Mini to the very overpowered Mac Pro (and very expensive too, if you want some badly needed extras, like more RAM, a better video card...)

And again, I am pretty sure not everybody is willing to buy an iMac.

Besides, as boo50 wrote, an iMac will be outdated in a couple of years.

And to everybody who keeps writing that Apple makes Ferraris, the Mini is more like a Fiat Cinquecento, so the comparison (between Apple and Ferrari) doesn't work.

Finally, those of you using osx86/hackintoshes and who like installing your own OS on a custom-build computer, no mater it's uses, are not who Apple is looking for.

That is a big mistake, because we are the very people who could double (at the very least) Apple's sales.

With my hackintosh I have already converted a couple of friends, who have bought real Macs. They could in turn convert other people... And please remember that in this country Macs are unknown even to most geeks.

after people come to me , and see my hackintosh at work

apple sell one more 24" iMac, and two minis.....

and i have got mine ACD 23".....

so man you are really wrong... about US, HACKINTOSH USERS.... .. .
