OS X has been installed on an old black and white iPod after years of tinkering. It's a very dumbed-down OS X with code that went through lots of chopping. It's not worth it. It requires tons of scrolling, runs extremely slow, and typing stinks. As far as I know, only 10.1 has been successfully installed on an iPod.

What they mean is partitioning the iPod harddrive and installing OS X x86 on the partition and booting off of the iPod.

Genuine Apple Macs boot up from iPod in case it is connected to a Mac thru FireWire (IEEE1394).

In the meantime, with PC it is possible to start it up from USB 2.0 external HD witn Windoze.

I do also wonder what is going to happen in case you install x86 on a USB-iPod and try to boot PC up with Mac OS x86... ;))

I dont know about mac but I bet you could install windows on it depending on if you can boot from usb on you motherboard, I know I have the option in my bios..... So feasably could you not install it to a pc motherboard with that option... it would be dificult to get the x86 version working because of all the patches and stuff but I bet it could be done.... you just heve to make the ipod go into disk mode before it tries to boot the next thing in the list..

I have installed the boot manager - system commander before, sometime when I plugged My IPOD 3g, there two item appeared in the boot menu. So, I think with using it, we can boot it from IPOD.

BTW, I used use 2.0 to connect Ipod, My laptop is ECS G551, a notepad Bought in 2 years before.

Since OSX can be installed to a flash drive, external drive, and the Ipod can be used as one. Is it possible to boot from an ipod into OSX86 with your pc?

I had to ponder this question out loud.

By the way, why not simply try it? :()

When my iPod (4-th gen, Click Wheel) comes back from service I'm gonna clarify this subject.

And I shall post the results in any case.. Stay tuned! :)

because i dont have an ipod. but i am thinking of getting the new ipod video.

Apparently installing Oses on an Ipod and booting/working from them could reduce the lifetime of it's Hdd. As it's heavily strained in the process and produces alot of heat. And since the Ipod Hdd is not cooled at all this is a very bad idea unless you want fried Ipod for the fun of booting from it.

doing this can and will use your iPod in a way it was not intended and may severely shorten the life of your iPod. The reason is that the little iPod hard drive wasn’t meant to be a full-time operating system drive. It’s okay to boot from it from time to time, but the little drives are rated to about 20,000 hours while desktop drives are usually rated to 750,000 hours or more. But, even with that said— the biggest reason thus will eventually kill your iPod is—the heat that will be generated inside the iPod from this much use isn’t what the iPod was designed for, so at some point you can and will fry your iPod.
