Asus Z270-WS Catalina blues - 15.4 constant lock ups and freeze ups.

Hi,

 

Have been working on converting my Asus Z270-WS into a Hackintosh but having system freeze ups and lockups shortly after starting up with 10.15.4 requiring me to press the reset button. Originally had 10.15.2 installed and after upgrading to 15.4 things became very unstable. Tried even installing the 15.4 supplemental update to no effect.  The 15.2 install is now running off of a live USB backup and for the most part seems stable short of the mouse sometimes just freezing up for a second now and then. So I suspect a USB issue. I also suspect wether the Adata hard drive is compatible. In anycase after upgrading from 15.2 to 15.4 was when I noticed the lockups so I did a fresh install and still no change in behavior. So have attached a bunch of diagnostic data if anyone has time to take a look. Much appreciate what ever anyone can do as loosing sleep on this problem. Was going to next start working on a custom DSDT but wasn't sure if that was required anymore as read now Clover does the patching on the fly. Made my own SSDT-EC file using a script I found in another tutorial using SSDTTime. So if anyone with expertise can take a look much appreciate it.

try it, just paste this EFI folder into EFI partition, use Catalina

bootloaders don't have power for miracle, all hacks need a good fine tune and ssdt is not a full solution, never

 

a good example is a apple DSDT serie 300 have 9k lines(very custom DSDT, is beautiful) and our DSDT from serie 300 have a 60k lines, have many trashes, the best ever is one full DSDT patched, removed unused devices, inject correct properties, add missing apple devices, etc, etc

I copied the EFI folder you provided to the root of a USB EFI installer disk and booted off of it. At first it seemed like it worked but 5 minutes into it it lockup again. As 15.2 works I am just going to stay with 15.2. Want to try the 15.5 beta though lack access. Anyhow must be something related to the hardware.

You think SSDT-EC.aml is the problem? Need to unplug alk usb hubs and extra devices to figure this out. Also just downloaded 15.5 beta and going to install after dinner and see what happens. Interesting that one of the symptoms is I get a black box hovering over mouse pointer sometimes. Might be a trigger. Happens on 15.2 also except the USB carbon copy is unaffected. No box when boot 15.2 from usb.

Came across a Reddit thread that may explain whats going on. I quote from the thread:

  • Apple added Ice Lake and Comet Lake support to the kernel

  • Problem is it wouldn't fit as-is, so the mask of the processor changed

  • This then meant that it turned from 16 bits to 20 bits long

  • This then broke Clover's KernelPM and AppleIntelCPUPM patch ""

The only solution they said was to go Opencore.

I have an OpenCore EFI I created for my Skylake system, if you would like to try it you are welcome, might give you a head start. I am able to boot, sleep works, sound works, networking. I do not have a video card in this as my RX 580 stopped working and is in RMA status, this is a build for iGUP but if your graphics card is supported, you shouldn't have a problem

Oh man thank you. Been playing around with it for last couple hours. Finally got keyboard working but can’t boot. If you could give me a head start that would be awesome. Only thing is I’ve got a 5700 XT and need WEG pikera arguments. Not sure how plug that in into OC? Thank you.

same with opencore in many cases after 10.15.4, forget a oc fanboys

clover or oc work good, just avoid oc quirks, after 10.15.4 freeze at boot in many cases

Thank you so much! Was about to give up! It works like a charm! I can't tell you how many hours I played around with this. Only thing is that black square over cursor bug is still there but I'm happy. One problem at a time. Thank you.

That was the error report from Console crash report. Wonder if there is anyway to take the 15.2 driver and install it on 15.4? So far got to say more stable but still random.

I am no expert but it reads like it crashed on the AMD card, can you remove it and run with iGPU and see of your system stabilizes. maybe a problem with the graphics card or the PCI's slot...

Seems like its the graphics card causing the issue. What a shame. Spent an arm n leg on this 5700 XT card hoping it would be compatible.

Checked the crash report logs on my 15.2 install and not one complaint about the AMD driver. So I'm now pretty confidant its the gpu

causing the issue. If this is something fixable, or would grafting 15.2 drivers onto 15.4 work is above my pay grade. 

 

Need an expert like @Slice or someone on that level to assist.

@Donw35 Got to still send my thanks for your help with Opencore. Was able to post without WEG natively with OC despite it crashing after 10 minutes. Fwiw was able to post and be stable on the iGpu integrated MB graphics with out a singe crash using Clover. This makes me think the video drivers or Framebuffers are borked in 15.4 for the AMD 6000 drivers. So guess I'm sticking with 15.2 or again ask if anyone knows how to transplant 15.2 video card driver kext for the 5700 XT on 15.4 if its even possible?
