Michael_K
Hi all, is or will it ever be possible to get some OS X version working with my Athlon XP having only SSE? Any ideas if it could be done somehow? Thanks, Michael Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34137-will-it-ever-work-with-only-sse/ Share on other sites
Colonel
Sadly no, OS X requires a minimum of SSE2. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34137-will-it-ever-work-with-only-sse/#findComment-241755 Share on other sites
Michael_K
Mh...can't I boot a Darwin shell at least? Maybe only the GUI needs SSE2 and something with QEMU could be done... EtherealRemnant
The OS needs SSE3, not SSE2. Emulating SSE3 AND SSE2 would be totally retarded. Rammjet
No. OSX only runs SSE2 under emulation and this is becoming more difficult as time goes on. Soon, only SSE3 will be supported. Michael_K
Ok maybe it's terribly slow...I just would like to know whether it's possible to boot Darwin without SSE2/3 -> emulating them for starting Aqua. Any ideas? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34137-will-it-ever-work-with-only-sse/#findComment-241911 Share on other sites
Mx34u
buy a new cpu and motherboard instead of wasting peoples time and forum space! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34137-will-it-ever-work-with-only-sse/#findComment-241926 Share on other sites
Rammjet
without SSE2/3 -> emulating them for starting Aqua. Writing an SSE2 emulator to work with the new 8.8.1 kernel is proving to be a major task. And quite possibly will never be done ever again even if successful. To the best of my knowledge, no one has ever written an SSE3 emulator or wants to. wow
i believe that i once read, that emulating sse2 on sse1 cpu's would be way to slow, the jump was to big for them, not like sse3 to sse2 was easier. So forget about it, it will never happen, sorry to crack your dreams.
