Hello everybody,

Since this is my first Hackintosh, I waited before doing any updates and disabled auto updates completely. I wanted to first make sure everything runs fine etc. Now I'm at a point where I have a second disk ready and would like to know

a) Best way to completely backup everything in general (maybe complete carbon copy? if so, which software? or maybe just use TimeMachine?)

b) Procedure of updating macOS on a Hackintosh. Just do (a) and then use the System Preferences for updating? Or reinstall the OS with an installer USB stick on top of the current system? Afaik it should be possible without destroying user data.

I do have experience with macOS / Mac OS X for a multitude of years now, but Hackintosh only around half a year.

Thanks in advance!
Dave

@ellaosx @millusions Thanks! I just downloaded it, chose a separate HDD that I intended to specifically use for this and selected "copy all files" and "safetynet on", essentially completely on default settings. Should be fine right?
After that is done, I will use the System Preferences and update to the latest macOS!

Little follow-up:
Update not working :frantics: I click "Update Now" in System Preferences, it restarts, then it says "installing update", after a short while it says "restarting", restarts and I'm on 10.14 again. System Preferences also still says I need to update.

I also downloaded the macOSUpd10.14.3.pkg and macOSUpdCombo10.14.3.pkg from Apple. The first one says "macOS 10.14.3 Update can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." The second one kinda works, but when rebooting, it sits at the "Installing Software Update" screen for a bit (loading bar doesn't move) and then just abruptly restarts. The Mac is then still on 10.14.

You need to select  macos install in clover, not your current macos.

But first, delete macos install folder n the root of your drive and upgrade agaiin.

What do I need to delete? I don't have a "macOS install" folder in the root of my SSD.

And what do I need to do in Clover? :D I don't understand

Probably "macOS Install Data", right? And maybe also installer.failurerequests?

And what about Clover? What do I need to do in Clover?

Delete macos install data only. Force clover to prompt for menu so you can select macos install

Oh you mean to force clover to show the boot menu on startup?

I activated the boot menu, but it only shows my backup drive, my main drive and Recovery HD.

Edit: my bad! I deactivated "Install" in Clover's "Gui" section, a long time ago before I knew that you could choose to just skip the Clover boot menu alltogether :wallbash:

But without your hint to "un-skip" the Clover boot menu (uncheck "Boot" → "Fast") I wouldn't have been able to complete the installation! The update went smoothly, thanks again!

Something I’ve found about Carbon Copy cloner.   It copies in HFS mode so the copy can’t be updated.   I have went another route.

Erase new disk GUID partition and APFS using disk utility.

Then use disk utility Restore.   Click on new disk (backup) and select Restore tab and check that it is restoring from the main disk.   This gives you an APFS backup that can also be updated.   All you have to do is mount the EFI of the backup and main disks and drag the EFI folder to the new one.   It gives you a perfect copy of your original setup.
