Jape, I would not be so affirmative.

My second hard drive seems to have strange behavior under Linux as well - hence... so I removed it and gave i am going to give back to seller. The model is:

Serial-ATA Bus:

SAMSUNG SP2004C:

Capacity: 186.31 GB

Model: SAMSUNG SP2004C

Revision: VM100-33

Serial Number: S07GJ1LA110820

Removable Media: No

Detachable Drive: No

BSD Name: disk1

Protocol: ata

Unit Number: 0

Socket Type: Serial-ATA

OS9 Drivers: No

S.M.A.R.T. status: Not Supported

IHad 2 drive like that + 1 PATA. I now have 1x SATA Samsung and one PATA for Mac OSX.

So basically MacOSX boot on PATA and use my Linux SATA disk (FAT32) as a share on my network and more extensively on amule.

So I will be affirmative in 2 weeks - the time it took to fill the SATA disk and reach a fsck unrecoverrable error and throw my disk away. If it does not do the same thing with my first SATA disk then I can say:

It works for me and the problme with my second Samsung which had a defect - which it seems so as since 2 days I had no more IOATABlocktralkalal - appart at bootime, and I have no more unexplained crashes... I did upgrade to 10.4.8 (JaS) few weeks ago. (I am using AMD SSE3).

only now a diskarbitration on my FAT partition... here is my boot log:

If you more of my system info. I can give copy of any file or any config. Let me know if I can help.

But since I removed my second SATA disk then it seems working.... we will see on the long run.

Nov 13 19:46:36 Amon kernel[0]: IOATAController device blocking bus.

It'll fail, later or sooner.

Just make the hdd spin until it hangs / corrupts something. The corruption rate seems to be pure random. One day it is three full hours before failing, but the next day it's a crash about 5 seconds after kextload'ing AppleVIAATA.

Although I'm curious... do you know you SATA controller device ID?

May be you are right and it will ultimately do something very wrong and kill my second SATA drive... but let's hope not !

Here is what I get out of my Mandriva 2007 Config Control panel:

Robert364: You have CK804 like me, the 0x005410de one.

BTW, I just started thinking... my SATA disk is connected to the 0x005510de controller, but , nForce boards (and all SATA boards) have two controllers. CK804' are 0x005410de & 0x005510de.

My disk is connected to the 0x005510de: I know it because I just have to add that ID to Info.plist in AppleVIAATA. Does anyone have it connected to 0x005410de ? Is it failing ?

Jape,

(call me Robert.. ;-) )

I did do something to have it work now I remember i wrote something .. look it is from my perosnal install log:

Look:

What I have done for the VIAATA story:

1) open terminal

2) sudo -s

3) cd /System/Library/Extensions/appleviaata.kext/contents

NOT DONE THIS <4) nano info.plist>

NOT DONE THIS <5) Now need to add your id in the "VIA SATA Controller" not in the "VIA PATA Controller">

NOT DONE THIS<6) save and exit>

7) chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/appleviaata.kext

8) chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/appleviaata.kext

9) cd /System/Library/Extensions/ioatafamily.kext/contents/plugins

10) and delete applegenericata.kext

11) rm /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache

12) rm -r /System/Library/Extensions.mkext

13) kextcache -k /System/Library/Extensions

14) reboot

and it works.

-25 oct 2006 - AMD - 10.4.7-JaS

for the disk connection on the MoBo there is 4 channel on this board.

The bios says that my first disk is connected on channel 2 but when looking on the mobo itself it says channel 0..(ie SATA0). My remaining SATA disk working with Linux and MacOSX - for DATA only with FAT32- is on SATA0 channel (recohgnize as channel 2 by the Bios - ie F12 menu).

NOT DONE THIS

WT* ???? :) Then you already had the extension somehow patched, I assume. It won't match the nForce device without patching Info.plist!

You can see which controller is a disk connected (in Windows Device Manager) like this:

1. Open Device Manager, view devices by connection.

2. Search for your disk, is usually under ACPI PC -> BIOS -> PCI -> nForce Serial ATA Controller -> ...

3. Open properties for the nForce Serial ATA controller your hdd is hanging from. Go to tab Details, select Device Instance Id

4. Look for VEN_10DE&DEV_0055 or VEN_10DE&DEV_0054. Here it is your device id (0055 or 0054).

Yes. I assume you are correct the Install dvd i got was certainly patch. I did not touch the the plist.info because at start up on verbose I had seen the CKxxx comming up but it was not stable so I decided to make only half of what was said - as I was unsure of my ID...

And no I cannot check my ID the way you say - because I DO NOT HAVE WIN install on my machine - mandriva 2007 or MacOSX... sorry but no XP. The only thing I can give to you is what I get from the Linux...

Vendor ID: 4318

Device ID: 84

Sub vendor ID: 5208

Sub device ID: 45059

but I never saw any of the 0055 or 0054 that everybody speaks about - that was also why I decided NOT to touch my plist

This is my plist: (untouched from install - I suppose that it was patched during install when I selected custom and amd patch etc..).

Here is my string from the Info.plist in the AppleVIAATA

<key>CFBundleIdentifier</key>

<string>com.apple.driver.AppleVIAATA</string>

<key>Hardware Name</key>

<string>8237 SATA</string>

<key>IOClass</key>

<string>AppleVIAATARoot</string>

<key>IOPCIPrimaryMatch</key>

<string>0x31491106 0x00e310de 0x005410de 0x005510de</st$

<key>IOProbeScore</key>

<string>1000</string>

<key>IOProviderClass</key>

<string>IOPCIDevice</string>

<key>Serial ATA</key>

<true/>

So obviously someone did the patch for me...

But I can't check my Vendor ID with Linux or MacOSX it seems ... or may be you have an idea?

the other thing i can give to you it is the address that i can see in the bootlog:

AppleNVIDIAnForceATA: NVIDIA nForce4 (CMD 0x170, CTR 0x374, IRQ 15, BM 0xf008)

Nov 13 19:45:38 localhost kernel[0]: AppleNVIDIAnForceATA: NVIDIA nForce4 (CMD 0x1f0, CTR 0x3f4, IRQ 14, BM 0xf000)

Nov 13 19:45:38 localhost kernel[0]: AppleVIAATADriver: VIA 8237 SATA (CMD 0x9f0, CTR 0xbf0, IRQ 23, BM 0xd000)

but no 0055 or 0054...

well done - I forgot that could happen... :(

Device ID: 84

That's 0x0054 (Hexadecimal) indeed. wink_anim.gif wink_anim.gif

And what do you think about the Diskarbiration i get at boot time ?

Also I want to note that i had plenty of problem with Spotlight taking much of my resources before the 10,4,8 update...but that is another story...

So my disk remaining working SATA 0 is on 0x0054... interesting. But does it help you ?

what was your install DVD ?

I have used JaS 10.4.7. for install and installed all AMD pacth stuff.

if I remember correctly it did not recognize the SATA on normal boot.

(first boot after install ok for SATA but next boots only my PATA)

Sometimes, I had my SATA on -x boot .. never understood why.

Then I made the kext modification of chmod

Then I was able to see my SATA drives most of the time... - but sometimes with some changes (ie the drives channels were not at the same place in the Disk utility.. really strange)

Then I installed the Ext3 package (useless for SATA ext3 anyway)

Then patched for 10.4.8 (JaS) SSE3

Then it worked ( the disk utility showed me the SATA drives at the same place all the time and the Spolight issue disappeared).

Could install way and/or DVD have an influence ?

Hope this helps.

Note:(funnily enough the very very first time I installed MacOSXx86, it was with JaS 10.4.6 and I did not understood that I had patch it... and it worked... for few hours then I decided to install the update from Apple website and of course... it crashed everything.. and then i understood that I had to pacthed the install for AMD).

Jas 10.4.6.

I installed on PATA, and I use my own AppleVIAATA kext to access my data SATA disk.

Didn't patch anything.

I think there have been no changes at all in IOATAFamily between OS X versions. Correct me If I'm wrong.

Jape,

For the 10.4.6. I had some problem -may be with the SSE3... but not sure.

I am newcommer on Mac OSXx86 but i would suggest to re-install with 10.4.7 and patch it to 10.4.8.

(Under 10.4.6 I never got my SATA anyway... and it worked for very short before crashing - It was'nt patched so i decided to install 10.4.7 with the custom AMD patch during install - then reboot twice (very important.. :) ... and then patch it directly with 10.4.8 and then try to use MacOSX...)

Only JaS could tell if pacthes have influences or one of the patcher could really tell what changes from one install to another...

But if there is no AMD patch applied then I would say some problem should occur... has some instruction - especially the sse2/3 are different - as i understood- from AMD and Intel- So try the patch.

Zee test: :thumbsdown_anim:

SATA-nforce4-macOSXx86: Day 2 ok.

(only IOATAController device blocking bus at boot time but therefater ok. - average use per day 4/6 hrs with heavy disk use on the SATA - ie emule server + samba server for video.).

Good Luck. :)

I'd like to know if you're using the bumped IOATAFamily kext. I don't have OS X right here, but I think you can look for kernel extension versions in Profiler / System Information.

The original IOATAFamily kext version shipped with all Tiger < 10.4.8 is IOATAFamily-160.3.2

The bumped IOATAFamily shipped with 10.4.8 is IOATAFamily-171.3.4.

Jape,

here is what I have from the system profiler:

Version: 1.6.0

Last Modified: 1/4/06 4:40 AM

Get Info String: IOATAFamily version 1.6.0, Copyright 2000-2004 Apple Computer, Inc.

Location: /System/Library/Extensions/IOATAFamily.kext

kext Version: 1.6.0f2

Load Address: 0x294e8000

Valid: Yes

Authentic: Yes

Dependencies: Satisfied

Integrity: Kext is modified

for 10.4.8 I applied the JaS patch - I did not use an Install DVD 10.4.87 but 10.4.7.... and patched it after install.

Good luck.

160 is the old kextension. :hysterical: Dunno about the kernel but I guess we have the same one (semthex patched ones being "rare" ;), the most common kernel is still 10.4.3/4's).

So we still don't know why it seems to work for you. Did you tried, ahem, mounting large DMG images (XCode is good example) ? (of course from SATA disk).

(And, before I forgot, diskarbitration messages are usually informative, they show you that the system is automounting a new partition it has just detected).

Hi Timmyj,

Yes I do. BUT everything works - ie my SATA disk works ok. It is the second day now... (before that my second SATA disk died either due to MacOSX or due to electro/mecha failure...) .

We will see on the long run if how it works.

I do have the IOATAblockingdevice message but only once at boottime and then all is ok...

(with other SATA disk it was each second)

With Jape we are trying to understand why it works for me and not for others...

(albeit everything might crash tonight or tomorrow... but my second SATA disk worked for 1 week before crashing...) So we will see.

All my video and emule file are on sata and all works ok. (so far...)

Thanks for trying to help us, Robert! :censored2:

At least with that boot log it is confirmed that you're using the AppleVIAATA and that your kernel is 10.4.4's.

I've not checked the IRQs nor BM port but I guess ( due to Murphy's Law :construction: ) that they'll be the same than mine's.

I suggest you do copy a few files around. Copy from SATA to PATA then from PATA to SATA, and then check from GNU/Linux or whatever OS the integrity of the copied files.

Edit: Also have a look at the Console app (in utilities) -> System.log. "blocking bus" messages may appear there.

Jape,

I moved about 3.6go of movies

then I get:

Nov 14 23:30:12 Amon kernel[0]: IOATAController device blocking bus.

Nov 14 23:33:52 Amon kernel[0]: IOATAController device blocking bus.

Nov 14 23:35:12 Amon kernel[0]: IOATAController device blocking bus.

Nov 14 23:35:35 Amon /Applications/RealPlayer.app/Contents/MacOS/RealPlayer: CMSCreateDataProviderOrGetInfo : Invalid colorspace type

Nov 14 23:38:39 Amon kernel[0]: IOATAController device blocking bus.

Nov 14 23:38:48 Amon kernel[0]: IOATAController device blocking bus.

But I an play the movies. One seems a bit corrupted but I nevre played it - all others ok. I will check the one that seems corrupted - i get an error on VLC, but I know that i got similar error on this movie with VLC for windows....

But clearly 23:30 was SATA->PATA and 23:38 PATA->SATA

I did finf some files at 0Kb which I knew were correct video clips - but some files are from my dead disk which I removed.. so difficult to be sure when it was corrupted.

But yes something is going on....working but might be not stable. To follow.

PS: ( yes I have my console always up and running to check what is going on on system and/or console).
