Shigun
I'm looking to get another laptop (my iBook G3 is noticably showing its age) however dont want to have to shell out a good $2000+ for a laptop which will offer sub-level performance compared to $1000 laptops that are non-apple based (please dont see this as a bashing post, im just saying that apples are expensive). Is there a recommended laptop which would be a good candidate for an OSX86 install? GBK.Xscape
sorry to say this but person after person asks what is the best computer to get for osx86. save yourslef the headache and shell out the extra money for a mac. everyone needs to know that osx86 is good for the computer you have now but buying a laptop that will work good for osx86 is dumb. Ahhh, ok. Well, I guess it just has to happen. Kind of a sad fate for a poor college student though, neh =P Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/29409-recommended-laptop/#findComment-202574 Share on other sites

When you say had troubles with, does that mean you couldn't get it working, or it was just a b*tch to get working? I'm no stranger to harsh configurations and long processes to get things working. Harietje
I have a HP Pavilion ZD8320EA, everything is working perfect and fast, even wifi out-of-the-box....Manual adjustments were required for ethernet (device_id) and graphics (Koverg & Callisto) and after that it's running version 10.4.7 without any problem, fast and reliable. errandwolfe
BIG Warning here. Most of the "budget" laptops out there are based off the ATI x200 series chipset and GPU. While you can get most of your devices working, as of right now no one has been able to get QE/CI enabled on an ATI x200 GPU. Just perfect! Mistake: Ethernet also works out-of-the-box, so ONLY ONE manual adjustment is required: the graphics -> koverg & callisto (b003) for the built-in Ati Radeon X600 Mobile interface: all resolutions via GUI-control, qe&ci, 100% working! (pMr)dEATHiNjUNE
mine is detailed in the sig. about to pickup a ASUS WL-107G PCMCIA as the built in SIS162 Wireless will not work no matter what i've tried. i assembled this laptop myself (for roughly $1300 in parts) and can play RTCW, Doom 3, HL2, Quake 4 and a good few other titles with 2xHQ AA+AAA and 4xHQ AF within Windows :censored2:. i would recommend looking into your options carefully. what you can get from a manufacturer likely will be quite the ripoff price wise. when i built this system last year i could find the same laptop with less powerful parts (slower HDD, CPU etc) coming from say VoodooPC for $2800. a good point of reference to should you want to piece something together or go with something manufacturered can be found here. if it were up to me i'd say build it yourself but that's just me. at anyrate don't forget to shop smart. shop s-mart! - Robert (PmR)DeathInJune Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/29409-recommended-laptop/#findComment-205122 Share on other sites
Shigun
The major problem with building a laptop from the ground up, is that most components are specialized by the maker for their specific laptop chasis', and as far as I know, there is only 1 company that makes barebone laptops. trav1085
Use ebay to find a dell inspiron 1150 laptop, it's about $1000 from dell (it's a discontinued model and is no longer sold) and you'll get it cheaper off ebay. if you get the 512MB RAM then that's the cheapest way, you'll have to go into BIOS to change the uma and don't expect half-life 2 running. osxgus
HI! Dell Inspiron 6000 (also discontinued), everything except wifi and cardreader works. The wifi card can easily be replaced for 20$ (dell truemobile 1450) and the laptop is now surely sub 1000$ also on the bay. I have one with the x300 Ati gfx chip which can be hacked fairly easy with a combination of the callisto patch b003(fixed) to enable widescreen res, and koverg patch to enable QE/CI/OpenGL (you can find more info here on the forum). If you get one with Intel GMA900 gfx; it should work natively. Make sure that you check the batteries on dell's webpage so they are not part of the recall program. With 1.8ghz or higher and 1-2gb of RAM this is a very usable laptop for OSX..! The image i used to install was JaS 10.4.6 ! This is *NOT* a sexy laptop, but it's an ok substitute until you've got an well paying job and can cash out for a MBP /MB! Don't forget that you can get a refurbished MacBook PRO! for ~$1600 directly from apple! (if you live in the states) cheers osxG Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/29409-recommended-laptop/#findComment-205433 Share on other sites

cardinal
At prices mentioned in the last 2 posts, you are much better off getting a macbook. You can expect that time spent setting up a hackintosh vs real mac is somewhere around 10:1. (initial installation, steep learning curve, troubleshooting, re-installation, being unable to use system update, etc) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/29409-recommended-laptop/#findComment-224773 Share on other sites
rschultz101
you missed the important point,..... unless the company I work for, is able to approve the purchase, and get the blessing of IT department, a macpro is a no go. back to square one. is there any dell, HP or IBM out there, new current model , that acutually is usable ? thanks, Robert At prices mentioned in the last 2 posts, you are much better off getting a macbook. tetubleu
I think buying a new PC laptop for OSX86 is not a good idea.... OSX86 is particularely good for people who want something better than the Macmini and cheaper than the Macpro Because Apple don't want to sell something with 3,5 HDs and a PCIE port cheaper than the Macpro Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/29409-recommended-laptop/#findComment-225046 Share on other sites
