Todays news is that Googles CEO, Dr. Eric Schmidt, has joined Apples' board of Directors.

Now, what I'm wondering is, with (A LOT) of Mac people turning to Googles' free services, Gmail etc, instead of .Mac, what his appointment would mean for the service? What are Google getting out of this? What are Apple getting out of this? Are we going to see Google writing .Mac2 ? Are Apple dropping .Mac in favour of Google services? Is the moon made of cheese?

I think we'll be seeing some pretty big things from Google and Apple together.

Something that will always stick in my head was at this year's Keynote at WWDC Jobs said "...yet the only thing Microsoft seems to be able to do recently is copy Apple and Google..."

I'm not sure about everyone else, but i took that as a major hint when he said it.

.mac free? Absolutely.

Google wants an OS for an official platform where they can develop interesting and innovative software dealing with their great server/internet empire, and Apple wants to integrate their Macs with the internet as much as possible (hell they were about to launch the iMac without a hard drive cuz they wanted it to be that linked to the net...).

Logical next step? Not a merger, but some really great cooperation because neither would have objection's to the other's internet-oriented goals, plus each has what the other wants.

I really hope this means program and service mergers

Gdrive & .Mac

Mail & Gmail

iChat & Gtalk (and a bit os MSN support wouldn't go a miss)

iCal & Gcal

The Rumored "Charts" & Google Spreadsheets

Spotlight & Google search history.

The First & Last ones would be the most helpful to me.

THe ability to search everything I've searched for on google in spotlight would be quite fantastic.

BTW as always google has the answer to xiberia's question http://moon.google.com/ (zoom all the way in)
