Problem with CS5 after 10.6.4 update

I wonder if anyone could advise me. I installed CS5 while running 10.6.3. It ran perfectly. After the 10.6.4 update, I found that QE/CI was disabled. (DVD Player would shut down if there was a DVD in the drive) I read that there were issues in 10.6.4 regarding NVidia cards when using EFI Strings only, or 3rd party kexts. It was suggested I inject my graphics into DSDT. I did this, removed the EFI strings from com.apple.boot.plist, (wasn't using any graphics kexts) rebooted and graphics are perfect. Also was able to use DVD Player with success... I did the same for sound too since I was editing DSDT (injected sound into my DSDT) and now only use hdenabler and the 10.6.2 stock applehda kext (hdenabler is only to make headphones detectable).

So, here is the problem: Everytime I open any Adobe CS5 product, I get an error message - something like "Photoshop has experienced an unexpected error and will quit" - which it and all Adobe products do as well. I used the CS5 removal kit to remove the installation and re-installed, but I get the same error.

We have CS4 at work, so I used their disks and installed CS4 on my system as a test - and all products open without a problem. Problem is, I own CS5 (payed dearly for it) and would like to use it but am unable to. Anyone have any advice for me?

Strange thing is that CS5 worked in 10.6.3. It's only since I updated and injected sound and video into DSDT. Can't put a finger on what caused this issue...

Edit: Forgot to mention... I had always used an applesmbios.kext to get DVD Player to work in the past since I had no smbios.plist. As part of the solution, I removed the kext and used someone else's smbios.plist from a very similar model motherboard. (mine Gigabyte G31-ES2C / his G31-ES2L) So, QE/CI may very well have been working. The old applesmbios.kext may have been DVD Player's issue. Could the new smbios be the fault?

Hi subxero,

first of all, CS5 runs only if your system has 64Bit kernel.

You must check if your Snow boots in 32 or 64Bit mode.

Check in your "com.apple.boot.plist" if you see something like: "arch=i386" or "-x32",

that means your System boots in 32Bit mode.

If you wont to boot in 64 mode, just type in your bootloader: -x64 -v

-v means "verbose mode" where you can see if snow boots with 64Bit Kernel...

If that solves your problem, you can permanently make your system to boot in 64Bit mode,

just change "-x64" instead of "-x32" (or "arch=x86_64" instead of "arch=i386") in "com.apple.boot.plist".

I hope that solves your problem. :)

Cheers

Thanks for the reply, but CS5 runs on the 32-bit kernel as well. Only Photoshop, After Effects and Adobe Premier run in 64-bit mode anyway. The rest like Indesign, Flash etc are all still 32-bit. That aside, any 64-bit application such as Quicktime Player, Safari etc all run in 64-bit mode even though you are on a 32-bit platform. You can even set Photoshop to run in 32-bit mode if you want.

As I said, CS5 was running fine (even photoshop which is 64-bit) before I upgraded OSX from 10.6.3 to 10.6.4 and made changes by injecting graphics and audio into DSDT and used a smbios.plist in place of applesmbios.kext.

Edit: Just phoned a mate who has an i-mac. He bought Photoshop CS5 extended and is running it fine on his i-mac. All i-macs boot into 32-bit mode by default. He says he has never used the 64-bit mode switch on boot. So... no that's not the problem here. I think by changing either the hardware through DSDT or the new smbios has changed something which affects the presets Adobe had before the changes. These presets are probably cached somewhere and are not deleted when using the removal tool.

You are absolutely right! What i wrote helped my friend with similar problem, hoped will help you too.

Can you write your specification, please?

Another question: Did you edited that new vanilla 10.6.4 DSDT, or you are using old 10.6.3 one?

HDAEnabler is doing the same thing as the edit you have made to DSDT for sound.

If you need Enabler for headphones I'd remove the edit from your DSDT.

There should be a crash report for CS5 in Console can you post it here?

The old applesmbios.kext may have been DVD Player's issue. Could the new smbios be the fault?

can you post the smbios.plist you are using? And has it changed your machines model id? What did it used to be with applesmbios.kext?

Could the new smbios be the fault?

I suspect it could be. I just swapped my smbios.plist on an X83v w/ a 9300GS, gained stability but broke QE/CI. I need to find the culprit in the smbios file, the machine and drivers have been great otherwise.

My experience with nVidia graphics has been positive with 10.6.4. Even to the point of applying it as the fix to get them working. I only use included drivers NVDANV50Hal and NVDAResman removing NV injectors, etc. That and I use an EFI string for my GTX285. CS5 is freakishly fast and very stable. A welcome change from CS4. Check the Enabling of GPU acceleration option in your PS preferences. It used to guarantee a PS4 crash. You might look into installing or updating your CUDA drivers too. Good luck!
