Hey everyone,

I have a new blog out there http://osxpetition.blogspot.com that is dedicated to the plight of OSX86ers. We are acquiring as many signatures, comments and donations as possible in an effort to convince Apple Computer to sell Mac OS X to general hardware vendors.

I will be taking the petition to an upcoming Apple shareholder's meeting.

Help make Mac OS X available to everyone!

Thanks very much,

AlienWarrior

...First, one thing that makes osx awesome is that 90% or more of the drivers made for it are programmed by apple... If it is oem'ed to dell or gateway there would be no way for apple to do such a good job of driver writing and you would have third party drivers installed...

What is the problem with this? Simple osx will be come buggy / crashy because of driver issues...

secondly, OSx86 is highly optimised for a single cpu core, if it were to be oem'ed then apple would have to release a kernel that is closer to the 10.4.4 one(well past that extreme for amd support)... which will really be disapointing for the apple hardware buyers.

Finally(there are many more reasons but I hate typing...), Who would buy a mac mini? an iMac? macBook? MacBook Pro?... no one... they will get cheap hardware and run osx for as little money as possible. This will kill apple the HARDWARE dealer

The only really hardware sales apple could do is their powermacs (where else can you find a quad cpu (2 duel core) for that price?) and their iPods.

P.S. I too wish for one day to buy osx from bestbuy or a local apple store and install it on my amd system, but it will not happen anytime soon... one can wish, but do not trust to hope... for it is hopeless as of now.

Driver issues.

Apple just needs to have base hardware. Our hardware works. There's support for it. What more do you want?

Second... since when is OS X optimized for a single core? I think you might be confused.

Third. Does Apple want to make money or do they want to be a company of martyrs? Apple could go to dell tomorrow and buy a boatload of XPSs, write driver support for them, slap an Apple logo on them, and create an ad campaign stating how much better Apple XPSs are than Dell XPSs. Superior Hardware (the same, obviously), Better Price (twice as much). And Apple fanboys will eat it up.

If you want to say that the only people who willingly give Apple money are ignorant plebs too suckered by Jobs to know the difference, then I suppose it's true that licensing OS X to Dell and HP would be a mistake.

Apple's actually gotten better with pricing. It's not money that keeps me from buying a Mac. The idea of giving Apple money makes me feel soiled. At least under a licensing agreement, I'm only supporting the operating system.

Yelling your opinion doesnt make it fact ;-p

It's been discussed so many friggin' times on here that there isn't any reason to even start it up anymore. So let's short-hand it:

me--DEATH OF APPLE

you--nuh uh

me--here's the economic figures that show it can't keep Apple alive

you--I'll buy it and know a few friends who will too.

me--not enough people

then we all start calling each other poopy heads.

First of all this petition is about selling os x for any pc not just oem... i guess i may have been missleading, but what i ment was that apple wont beable to write drivers for every peice of hardware they will need to support... So you will get third party drivers... big deal most windows drivers are third party. The thing is that in windows it is a pain in the ass because there are soo many drivers that conflict... that is one of the biggest reasons windows was soo unstable (this is mostly true for windows me if you ever used it.)

Second... since when is OS X optimized for a single core? I think you might be confused.

I'm sorry i also may have been misleading here too... what i should have said was that it is only optimized for one type of core... the intel core (which is has versions in the intel core duo and intel core solo)

Third. Does Apple want to make money or do they want to be a company of martyrs? Apple could go to dell tomorrow and buy a boatload of XPSs, write driver support for them, slap an Apple logo on them, and create an ad campaign stating how much better Apple XPSs are than Dell XPSs. Again this point is invaild... there would be no difference from this and buying a normal mac... that will still make them a hardware company. What this thread is about is selling just the OS for any hardware... build from scratch or a x86 computer built from any company.

If you want to say that the only people who willingly give Apple money are ignorant plebs too suckered by Jobs to know the difference, then I suppose it's true that licensing OS X to Dell and HP would be a mistake.

I dont think i said anything like that... unless if you thought when I said apple is a hardware company, it ment that.... but it really doesn't... what i mean is that apple makes most of its money from hardware(this has been said hundreds of time all over this board.) not from its software sales.

Apple's actually gotten better with pricing. It's not money that keeps me from buying a Mac. The idea of giving Apple money makes me feel soiled. At least under a licensing agreement, I'm only supporting the operating system.

again... im not sure if this is directed to my post... but i dont think i said anything about that.

I guess you took my post the wrong way... all I wanted to say was that OS X would have to be a lot worse if it was biege box and it would not keep apple alive unless they had more software to back it up... also like 95% of the pc market would be vary helpful too.

P.S. you all are poopy heads....

not a chance IMHO, and not sure it's desirable.

I do wonder if apple is happy to have people hack at OSX to get it running on boxes, as I'd put money that a lot of people who experiment with OSX will end up buying a Mac. I will.

if they open this up, it's got to run on every piece of hardware and that is a support nightmare.

There's not enough benefit to outweigh the costs/hassle in this for apple to move it to any PC.

All IMHO, of course, and the debate is interesting!
