Well i just installed Kalyway 10.5.2 on my Inspiron 1525.

And I've got far enough as to log in and open applications and such.

I know the deal with turning it on and sleep, etc.

But ethernet and sound really need to be fixed.

And also power management. That is seeing how much battery is left.

I've tried doing the available tutorials but i really don't understand.

Help would be appreciated.

Keep in mind that I'm a total n00b at all of this.

So go a little slow.

Thanks :withstupid:

EDIT:

Also the USB inputs don't work...

I hate to say this, but getting OS X working on a PC is not for the faint of heart. This thread seems to have some useful information. I would hold off on installing any programs or doing anything significant until you get everything working, in case you have to do a clean install.

Ok, so first I would try installing VoodooHDA to get audio working. Head over to the Voodoo Labs website to download it. When you unzip the package, you'll end up with .kext file and a .prefpane file. Put the .kext in either /System/Library/Extensions or /Extra/Extensions (only if it already exists) and reboot. When you load Mac OS X, use the -f option to force the computer to rebuild it's extensions index. When the computer boots, you can install the .prefpane by double-clicking it.

As for your ethernet, could you by any chance tell me precisely what type of hardware you have?

In regard to the power management, I'm afraid I don't really know much about that.

Oh and you may be really in luck. I just did another google search and I found this tutorial which looks to be extremely detailed and helpful. Report back if you can't figure out something.

Ok so i tried the Audio thing. I installed and then booted -f and it went through it all but an error saying it may have installed wrong came up and when i go to access the VoodooHDA prefpane, it says "Can't get registry-entry path" then it will go into the prefpanel, and clicking anything makes it come up with the error "Can't open IO Service"

Any ideas?

There are several install guides for the Inspiron 1525, use the search box above or google to find them.

The latest version of VoodooHDA can be found at the ProjectOSX forums.

@ Jeremy the Wicked:

VoodooHDA does not work from /Extra/Extensions because of dependencies on IOAudioFamily.kext and OSvKernDSPLib.kext.

It needs to be in S/L/E.

What if you were to copy the kext to /System/Library/Extensions/ ? That's what i did and i still get the error. Is there someplace else to put this kext?

No, that's correct. Make sure to fix permissions and flush the extensions cache. You cannot use Disk Utility to do this because it doesn't know what permissions to set for VoodooHDA, you have to do it manually from Terminal.

Copy VoodooHDA.kext to /S/L/E, run Terminal.app. If an error message about VoodooHDA appears, just click it away.

Type

sudo -s (and your password, don't worry it's supposed to be invisible)

chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions

chmod -R go=u-w /System/Library/Extensions

touch /System/Library/Extensions/

Save these commands to a text document so you always have them handy when you need to work in S/L/E.

On some systems you must delete AppleHDA.kext when you install VoodooHDA.

Sorry but what is /S/L/E? thanks!

i did as you said but i just got a kp when i rebooted after doing the terminal commands. Also if i tried to boot with -f on startup th gave me a kp. thanks for trying.

have you removed AppleHDA.kext and AppleAzaliaAudio.kext ? Sometimes all these together in S/LE/ conflict, so only one of them. You could also try an Enabler together with AppleHDA OR VoodooHDa. ( HDAEnabler.kext ).

For me HDAEnabler plus VoodooHDA works on ALC 272 Audio, gives Sound out thru Laptop speakers.

good Luck.

Where should i put the HDAEnabler kext? I assume in S/L/E/ but some beople have been putting it in /Extra/Extensions/ which for me is a mkext. Also you have to remember I am using Snow Leopard. Thanks!

First off, I get the same error whenever I use the prefpane, but once you set the audio to output you should have sound, so it's not much of an issue.

Extra/Extensions is a set of folders that are set up manually during many different guides installs, it's something of a default standard. Chameleon uses the folder for kexts, which is the boot loader many users use. Generally speaking, anything that goes into S/L/E can go into E/E and vice versa. Using Extra/Extensions just adds a layer of protection if a kext messes things up (ie I believe safe mode -x booting doesn't look at Extra/Extensions) so you can remove a kext if it causes a KP (kernel panic).

You can add that folder if you like, just remember that you want to make sure that you don't have conflicting kexts (like VoodooHDA and AppleHDA) or that dependent kexts are in the same place.

Hope it helps.

EDIT I forgot to add that the Dailyblogged link above will get you an almost perfect install of OS x, and the blogger is more than happy to help with any difficulties.

(ie I believe safe mode -x booting doesn't look at Extra/Extensions)

Yes it does, otherwise I wouldn't have working ethernet, correctly identified ICH10R with gray drive icons, or even be able to boot in safe mode at all (/extra/extensions/fakesmc.kext).
