Hi,

I just build this new machine:

CPU: Intel 930

Motherboard: Asus P5LD2-VM

Memory : 2gigs.

OS: 10.4.4 Maxuss plus 10.4.5 patch plus 10.5.6 update v3.

The reason that I ask this is because it thought that this new machine would be much faster than my Macbook Pro 1.8, (After all, the 930 CPU is a dual core 3.0 Ghz against 1.8 on the Macbook) but it just feels the same. How can I test if this new system has SS3 enabled?

thanks for any ideas on this.

as far as i know a 1.8 ghz core duo and a 3.0ghz pentium-d shouldn't be too far off in performance. i don't think you're gonna see a lot of difference between the 2. i would imagine there are some bookmarks somewhere that can give you more insight on this.

Guys,

How can a Dual Core Pentium D 930 (that runs at 3.0 Ghz and have a big cache) can be the same speed as a Dual core 1.8? They have both dual cores and the 930 runs 50% faster.

Curiously, the Ananthech article do not compare Core Duos with Pentium D of the 9xx line, wich are really nice CPUs.

cheers

Ric

Going back to the subjet of this thread,

Is there any test I could do to really check if SS3 is enabled correctly on this machine?

CPU-Z running on XP tells me that this CPUis SSE3 capable, but in the Mac side, I can not find any way to check for this. Or this is just non sense?

thanks

from what i have read here if your cpu is sse3 capable then it will be used, even if u have installed sse2 support. is u have sse2 support installed then sse3 won't show up on the list of capabilities in my computer. in all my reading here recently i found this info but i don't' remember what post it was in.

clock speed is not the only factor in determining the abilities of a CPU. it's commonly known that the current crop of AMD cpu's are a lot faster per mhz than the current line of pentiums. a 1.8 ghz athlon is roughly equivalent to a 3.0 ghz pentium. the core solo/duo chips are on par with the athlons in that regard. the "pipeline" of the pentium chips is longer which basically means that it's not as efficient as the core series, and the amd chips. there is a lot of info online about why the pentium isn't as fast per clock speed as other chips. not to say that there is anything wrong with a pentium, it just has to work faster to get the same amount done. this is why earlier i said that u shouldn't see a lot of difference. if anything the core duo may be faster
