My setup

OSX: Retail Snow Server 10.6

MB: EP45-UD3LR v1.0

CPU: Intel E5300

Mem: OCZ Gold ddr2 4gb 1066mhz

HD: All Sata II

1x80gb Maxtor

1x1TB Hitachi

1x1TB Samsung

1x1.5TB Seagate

GPU: Apple 7300GT (found in my local pc store)

DVD-RW: Sata Pioneer Drive

Everything works flawlessly.. the only issue I had was that it did not pick up my maxtor drive on chameleon bootup.

I had to mess around the ordering of the sata connection on the motherboard.. a bit of trial and error resolved that. I like booting from my usb stick so not booting from hard drive.

I am now thinking about updating to 10.6.2.. but not sure if it will work.

Just make a complete backup before you do, or best is do a separate install on a spare partition, and try there 1st, I have a feeling your Graphic card is going to give you some problems with this, see some of my other posts about this, where I had a 6600 and 7800 ... Had to replace it with a 9500, but after some reading it looks like I should have opted for the 9800.

I updated my 1.3 USB install with the new bootloader 1.4 from this download ( http://redirectingat.com/?id=292X457&u...bit.ly%2F5qXWWI ) and after I cannot boot anymore- always kernelpanic.

Seems there is something wrong or this bootloader is only for the thumbdrive?

Question:

is there a way to backup the bootloader dsdt.alm, Extra folder etc. ?

Can I just copy the stuff to another place and write it back in emergency cases ?

Will I have difficulty making the necessary adjustments to BIOS during the install procedure with a Mac USB keyboard? I see that from my Gigabyte motherboard online manual in the BIOS section that USB keyboards may be disabled by default! What have others done that do not have access to a PC keyboard?

Thanks

In my case (GA-EP45-UD3LR) the USB-SUPPORT was enabled by default, i guess. I think you should get this motherboard, it`s not very cost, but in this way you can fully enjoy this install, cause it makes no problem at all

Also you can use USBtoPS/2 adapter to make changes in your BIOS. These adapters are extremely cheap.

um.. I don't think a USB to PS/2 adapter will work with a keyboard that cannot send a PS/2 signal. (Some PC keyboards can send both, as I understand, so they can use the adapter.)

I specifically need/want an x58 motherboard, but thanks for your input, toldi!

I have the same problem, always kernelpanic

Apple's reccomended cards for SL are

  • NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 9600M GT, GeForce 8600M GT, GeForce GT 120, GeForce GT 130, GeForce GTX 285, GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce 8800 GS, Quadro FX 4800, Quadro FX5600
  • ATI Radeon HD 4670, ATI Radeon HD 4850, Radeon HD 4870

GT & GS seem to be the certified guarantees.

I found the best is 8800GT "perfect"

For what its worth, I am using the 8500GT with zero issues, HD movies play fine and everything works as it should

Still having issues with 10.6.2.

I started my failsafe partiton after a reinstall and update to 10.6.2. and get a kernel panic when something goes wrong with "AppleIntelCPUPowemanagement.kext".

See attached picture.

I already removed the kext and ran kext-utility. Still crashes.

Any ideas?

Best regards,

You also have a EP45T-UD3LR motherboard, right?

Hey! I used your guide to build some hackintoshes, veeeery easily and with 0 problems at all. So far 3 complete and easy installs. I have a GA-EP45-DS3 board too and I'm thinking if it would be possible to use your guide to install SL on it. Is it?

Very much thanks in advance !

So, I redid the USB-Stick and installed again and then downloaded the update to 10.6.2. an got a nice KP (see picture). Maybe it's the Geforce 7300 GT 256MB?

For any one using Nvidia 7300gt Graphic Card, add the following kext to your Extra folder that will stop KP after GUI

* NVInject – An Nvidia graphic injector *x64 only

* Natit – Graphic injector KEXT with editable paramaters.

You get get these from Stella’s blog http://stellarola.tumblr.com/post/165429070/prepare-yourself

I' ll give it a shot

Well actually it booted but there was no video playback in vlc. So I guess I'll have to get a new GFX card. Any suggestions?

After the update have you tried booting from the bootcd selecting SL in verbose mode to get in and thn reinstalling the boot loader?

No, I used the USB stick I made according to the instructions by mrjanek. I will try to boot it with the stick but there seems to be a general problem with the Nvidia 7XXX series with SL 10.6.2. As it cost only 22 Euro I wouldn't mind replacing it. What's better? 9800gt? 8800gt?

If you're looking for something cheap then I recommend Nvidia 9500GT. It costs about 45 euros and will do well with HD video although not with games.

No, unfortunately not. Do you have 10.6.2 running with your 8800gt?

I'll head to the local hardware shops on monday.

I have the 8600GT working in 10.6.2 using the bootcd, a friend has a 8800GT and that made light work of everthing we through at it.

Just want to say that I had previously tried a different boot loader and was having a bunch of issues, and I now switched to your GigabyteBoot method, and everything is much better.

Here's my current system:

CPU: Intel Core2Quad Q9650 3GHz

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P

Video card: EVGA 9800 GTX+ 512MB

Memory: 8GB (4 x 2GB) Patriot Viper 1066MHz RAM (set to 800MHz for stability)

Disc drive: SONY Optiarc SATA DVD burner

Hard drives: WD 750GB SATA system drive & Seagate 1.5TB SATA media drive

Power supply: Rosewill 950w PSU

OS: Snow Leopard retail disc updated to 10.6.2

Everything seems to be working well (knock on wood) for now. Thanks for putting this up!

Hi!

thanks again for this tutorial - awesome!

My setup works like charm, with two little problems:

1.) with every reboot, I manually need to switch sound output to internal speaker!?

2.) My BT-USB-Stick only works sometimes and only on certain usb-ports!? (it's a belkin F8T009)

If anybody could solve these problems, I would shout out a drink for! ; )

mike
