I want to build a case mod, after having seen those impressive mods around here, too.

Now, I have an Asus P5K-E Wifi/AP Mainboard. Now, as I´m not yet sure which case to buy (G3,G4,G5), the question is:

Which case gives enough room to take that board??? I couldn´t find any specification about that. All i have found are OUTER specs .....

Any suggestions for that ?

Full ATX or microATX?

OK, I looked that up, it's full ATX.

All cases will "do", but it all cases (heh), you will have to cram it in. Most difficult would probably be G3/G4, followed by MacPro then G5.

I did one with a G5, it wasn't too bad, but you need to saw some metal.

Good luck :(

I have a spare Graphite G4 case available, if you would like I can open it up and take some measurements - it's your call.

I can't honestly remember without looking, but it should fit a standard ATX mobo.

You might have some problems with the motherboard standoffs being in different places than the ATX standard specifies, depends whether Apple hardware follows the standards (I don't remember anymore) :thumbsdown_anim:

Also, they have a clever internal design where certain bits like CPU heatsinks are shaped to fit against the CD drive bay, not sure if that would be a problem... You might have a massive Scythe cooler for example.

Oh yeah, and in G3 and G4 cases the motherboard is fitted to the hinged side panel/door (amazing idea IMHO), so issues may arise when you try to close the door back up and your hardware is getting stuck!

PS I think the G3 and G4 have identical chassis designs, there may be slight variations inside.

Hope that's helped :)

I agree with pirloui, that any of those cases can potentially house an ATX board, but I believe the G5 would be the easiest. None of the Apple cases use standard mounting because their logic board is propriety. Anything is plausible, but it's definitely going to take some ingenuity.

Yeah, i´ve seen, that the MDD casses are not suitable :censored2:

As the G5 case is quiet expensive -which i can´t afford atm- i would try to stick with the G4 case. The interesseting question is:

Will the board (ATX Form Factor 12 inch x 9.6 inch ( 30.5 cm x 24.4 cm ) ) fit on the door?

I´m using a Thermaltake Gunmetal Orb, so i guess i need a Slimline DVD to get the door closed afterwards, but that "should" work ...

Cheers

There's many G4 mods on this forum so ATX should fit fine. I was looking at one last night that was a normal ATX motherboard - even fitting the standoffs properly without any problem (think it was a Gigabyte UD45-P something...)

Indeed there are G4 full ATX mods. Probably just a bit more squeezing, and a couple of PCI less.

They are nice towers, and more compact that G5/MacPro.

You will need a fairly "flat" CPU cooler, as it will align with the PSU.

What you could do is to use a flat and large CPU cooler without fan, couple with a 12" fan PSU.

Silverstone has a case like that.

So i think thats it, i´ll have to use G5 case

I plan to upgrade to q9550 with Mugen 2 or Nirvana NV120, so thats definately NOT going to fit into G4 ...

Thanks anyway!
