Vanilla install on Dell Vostro 1510 - 1520

Hi, i follow your guide, and everything it's ok. everything works till i install the Updates 10.6.1 and 10.6.2. After that i've got an black screen at boot something like "no mac version set", Kernel panic.

 

i try to boot with SL CD but still don't work. Any ideea ?

There are different Dell vostro 1015 models, are they all compatible with SL, or I have to look for something specific?

Just bought Dell Vostro 1220. Configuration similar to 1520.

 

Got SL installed, but after replacing kext files from archive for 1520, keyboard and mouse (connected thru usb) is stop working, either laptop keyboard and trackpad is not working. Any solution to this ?

I have 2 1520s. After Windows starts, nothing happens (on both). If I run setup.exe on the snow leopard disk, the installer's only options are "Remote Install Mac OS X" and "DVD or CD Sharing" and neither gets me where I think I should be (booting and language selection). Hopefully I'm doing something obviously wrong.

All these would require distinct custom dsdt.aml files I believe, and you didn't say what exact BIOS or hardware configuration your downloadable dsdt.aml file was created from?

I confirmed that these issues are identical for both the wired ethernet of the RealTek 8168, and the wireless 802.11n of the Dell 1510 wireless N card (which I modified to be recognized as real Apple Airport using <http://prasys.co.cc/2009/12/rebranding-broadcom-802-11abgn-cards-as-airport/>). This network problem is very bothersome and so far intractable. Any solutions? I've tried both version 1.9 and 1.8 of IONetworkingFamily.kext, and they are both pretty much the same, intermittent network connections on both wired & wireless (I haven't tried Firewire or Bluetooth networking).

I've read that each different BIOS version and hardware configuration (including different RAM amounts) requires a new custom dsdt.aml file? I'm having a hard time finding instructions on creating a custom dsdt file, and when I don't know exactly what's been patched in this one, it's hard to know what's going on exactly.

The Bios version I used was A02 and there are several tutorials on extracting a ddst as well as modifying and recompiling which are beyond the scope of this tutorial. Try using Google to find this info, as well as tracking down your intermittent networking issues, which are also covered in other threads. This tutorial was written in October of last year right after Snow Leopard was released. Much has changed since then....

And where does it say you have to boot windows? You need to boot from either the CD or USB where the boot loader is located.

hi, using vostro 1520 BIOS a07 here

 

using the supplied dsdt.aml, my machine froze. I'll take a peek later. i'm not using dsdt.aml now

 

voodoops2controller does not work for 64-bit, so the arch=i386 is a must to use keyboard/trackpad.

graphic enabled using GraphicEnabler=yes

 

shutdown/restarts works ok. sleep is ok, but froze and did not wake up after that. i'm planning on sleepenabler later on.

I skimmed a bit through this thread, didn't have time nor mental strength to go through 10 pages , and I've seen some people had problems post-install with the keyboard. I have no idea what was already suggested, but given that it didn't pop in google search when I tried to find a solution for myself I'm guessing that there aren't many solutions out there. Anyway, I installed v 10.6 on Dell Vostro 1510, I've written my spec and what I got working here.

 

Here's a brief explanation of the steps that worked for me, I can't and don't guarantee it's the shortest process or that it'll work for any spec but my own. Oh, and for this you will need a working Mac, either another physical one or like I did it on a VMWare running on a previously installed windows XP partition.

Pre installation steps:

1. I didn't use the snowboot DVD, instead I've Restored the 10.6 installation image to a USB thumb.

2. After restoring the image you need to install chameleon (I used chameleon 2 RC3) on the thumb.

3. Follow the steps that are supposed to be POST install now, but use the thumb drive instead of an OS X partition. This means you need to copy the DSDT.dsl to <Mac OS X Install DVD>/ and everything in "Vostro 1510"/Extra to <Mac OS X Install DVD>/Extra etc (I hope this is clear enough that by <Mac OS X Install DVD> I actually mean the root folder of your USB thumb drive). This step actually makes sure your setup will have everything it needs to run.

4. Restart and change your BIOS settings to boot from USB Storage first.

 

Installation:

Boot into the Mac OS X Install DVD and install Mac OS X as mentioned in the guide at the beginning of this thread. I mentioned I had a win xp partition, here is where you say goodbye to it. I haven't seen a guide that allows you to install OS X without deleting the windows partition, if you know how I'd appreciate a link

 

Post installation:

Now here's the trick, the local installation for some reason does not include the kexts etc that you installed on the thumb drive, so booting from your HD will result in a frustrating "Before we begin please connect a keyboard" message from your new installation. So:

1. After installation, you will need to boot from the thumb drive again, for this you will probably need to set the BIOS definitions again.

2. When chameleon boot loader shows up, don't load the HD installation, instead boot the Mac OS X Install DVD again

3. Get to the part of the installation where you can start the Disk Utility.

4. Open the Terminal from the same place you open the Disk Utility, we're going to do some manual work

5. Copy the VoodooPS2Controller.kexts (I'm not sure that's the exact name but you know what I meant by it) from /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Library/Extensions/ to /Volumes/NAME_OF_YOUR_LOCAL_PARTITION/System/Library/Extensions/

if you don't know how, lookup any linux / unix guide on how to work with the terminal.

At this stage I copied the rest of the kexts and other required files, since... well.. we're already here, why do half the job.

6. Whether you decide to copy the rest of the kexts or not, you will (probably) need to edit your com.apple.Boot.plist. You need to make sure that the Kernel Flags is set to arch=i386. Unfortunately there's no vi/vim/pico/nano/emacs or any other well known linux / unix text editors. You'll need to run these next two lines in order to edit the file:

 

sed -e "s/<string><\/string>/<string>arch=i386<\/string>/g" com.apple.Boot.plist > temp
mv temp com.apple.Boot.plist

 

this works given: a) you are already at the directory where com.apple.Boot.plist is located. under <key>Kernel Flags</key> you have this: <string></string> (meaning, empty).

7. reboot

 

This is it, you're done. At this point you have completed the post install steps, if you haven't forgotten anything you should be able to restart, boot from your HD and run OS X smoothly. If you can spare the few bucks the USB thumb drive costs I would strongly suggest keeping a working installation drive aside and get yourself a new one

You might also want to install OS X on another partition, on which you'll experiment with drivers and other stuff (like updating to OS 10.6.4) prior to applying them on your main OS X installation.

 

This was a lot longer than I'd expected... Hope this helps.

Hi guys, newb here with a couple of issues with my Vostro 1520 I cannot seem to solve.

 

I've followed the guide to the letter and read all 10 pages of comments as well and my head is still spinning.

 

My main issues are wireless and graphics (QE/CI), I do have the Dell 1397 card in my laptop, yet running the script several times has had no effect whatsoever and the only networking hardware detected is Firewire!

 

The other issue pertains to my graphics card, I have the intel graphics card not nvidia, which, according to the guide, should support QE/CI out of the box yet I don't have a DVD player icon and system profiler says nothing about QE/CI either.

 

If anybody could point me in the right direction I'd be very greatful, I may be a newb but I want to learn.

i can confirm that the system works under 1.6.4 - i suggest to use an efi partition with munky' s way.

As for the wireless, I'll keep trying - I remember that script taking just as long to "take" on my mini 9 (which works flawlessly now!!)

I think it is worth paying for the Nvidia card if you are interested in playing games like Modern Warfare or similar. Otherwise I guess it's up to you. I am using the Dell wireless 1397 card

 

 

 

I have to check the file, It might be like that because I modified the rar file on a Windows PC, I would ignore the MAC OS folder and just use the 1510 folder.

 

 

 

I think you can ignore error number one, this is normal. For number two, if you are installing Leopard, and not Snow Leopard try using DFE Grub or similar that boots the Leopard install disk. This is much easier to get to work because you dont need to worry about DDST or 64bit kext etc. look in the Leopard install forum here (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=126085)

2) After I see #1, I still get a drive list and can sort of load up off my retail Leopard DVD. The problem here is that the installer never really fully loads up. I just see the background, and a spinning cursor. After about 5 minutes the DVD spins up as if something is about to happen, but about 10 seconds after that it goes silent again. I thought maybe my machine was just slow, so I let it sit overnight with the spinning cursor, but nothing had happened by the next morning (the cursor still moved though so it wasn't a completely frozen system)

My trouble has been moved to an other one !

I resolved the last trouble with changing Bootloader 'generic.iso' and it seams work well, access to installation menu, to disk utility, and installation past very well !

But when i reboot my pc, i change the installation cd by the bootloader one's. and then i choose my Mac DD, and then the chargement is begening the apple with the litle circle who is turning around.....turning around..........turning around..............turning around................turning around

 

I wait about 2h and anything !

 

Have you got any idea to fix this trouble ? tks
