spintronic
I am a newbie to the site, first of all, so I do hope I do not violate any terms of use agreements. I just wanted to post that I have had success getting OSx86 up and running on a Dell Inspiron 1000 notebook. It's a Celeron M 2.2 GHz with 512MB ram with a DVD-ROM/CD-R drive. I used the tiger-x86-flat.img install using Ubuntu Live/external USB hard drive method. It took me a little bit to figure out (using google search) to use the "platform=X86PC", safe mode and passwd change switches to get it up and running. It is running, and quite nicely. For the record, I do presently have an iBook G3 800, so I am no stranger to MacOS. (I'm on my custom PC typing this though - its an AthlonXP based desktop) I still have to get the sound and onboard ethernet working, but I wanted to relate that USB audio does work right out of the box. I have a Creative Soundblaster Live 24-Bit USB box. I plugged it in (once i got out of safe mode) and voila - audio! I do want to get the onboard working. I will do some searching around here for tips on the audio and networking as well as any other patches. It is stable and I haven't had any issues. Took me a bit last night to deal with the img file, but that was because of my own stupidity (I forgot that with my external usb hd, that you can't have files bigger than 4gb when formatted as FAT32. I moved files off of the partition, reformatted as NTFS and booted with Ubuntu Live and did the "dd" command.) I wanted to make sure that the Celeron M supported SSE2 before doing this so as not to waste my time trying. Will let you know about my progress with the other stuff, and any tips would be most welcome (moreso with any kind of issues specific to x86 OSX) I can deal with the Mac stuff. ttys! I haven't looked at the specs of the 1100, the 1000 has the SiS M650 chipset and SoundMax Audio - the networking is SiS 900... jb_gmd
Specs: Inspiron 6000 1.6 ghz Pentium M 1.25 gigs of ram 60 gig hd ATI X300 128M Did a fresh install from the dev DVD working; sound, graphics, networking With the patches for sse2 I've been able to run lots of apps successfully. Sometimes it does freeze up and I have to reboot. Unfortunately I'm stuck at 1024x768 very fuzzy Also my dell lcd monitor won't do 1280x1024 for some reason I'm guessing its a refresh mode issue but setting it in the bootloader hasn't helped anyone have any ideas? ElessarBarton
Ok, i have a Dell Inspiron 1000 with a 2.2 Ghz Celeron. 512 MB of RAM, but really its 448 MB because 64 MB is alloted to my built-in graphics. Now, i would love to install Mac OSX on my laptop because i have fallen in love with them at college here. But i dont have the money to but a nice Mac computer, so until then, i wanted to run it on my Inspiron 1000 and get more used to it. My one main question is how does it run? Is it slow? Stable? Can i dual boot, thus allowing me to keep Windows on here along with my school work? I could partition my HDD and give 10GB to Mac OSX, that should be enough i would assume considering i'll just be using it to get used to things. Thanks for whoever takes the time to answer my question Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/1883-success-dell-inspiron-1000/#findComment-60320 Share on other sites
