I´ll just put this simple: can you build a very powerful osx86 machine today, e.g. what is the best graphics card supported etc?

I wanted to get a powerful laptop, but it doesn´t seem to be possible so I´m thinking how powerful desktop can be built around this project today. :weight_lift:

This is easy. Get a real Mac. You get the speed AND guaranteed compatibility :hysterical:

as much as i think apple hardware is overpriced, instead of blowing more money on getting the best and most expensive hardware, you should just spend less money and get an mbp. its guaranteed compatibility with windows xp and os x and the system specs are more than enough to handle the toughest applications, what more could you want?

EDIT: AS YOU CAN SEE, IM ADVOCATING BUYING AN MBP IF YOU WANT A POWERFUL SYSTEM AND OS X!

Overpriced ?? Don't forget that you get the most inovative system, high performance and other nice stuff with the Mac. For instance the new way to connect your power supply cable to the laptop (magnetic connector). Same for the lid of the laptop (no more plastic pins) etc...

The 2nd hand price of a mac or mac laptop is still higher than that for a pc or the most expensive PC laptop.

If you compare the MacBook Pro with one of those cheap overloaded plastic laptops they sell everywhere you'll notice the difference.

Yeah seriously... Mac Book Pro.

Have you seen the new one (17 incher)? They are powerful, you can dual boot windows... support for a year... plenty large resale value even after two or three years I'd wager.

Either that or get a Pentium D or Athlon X2, a compatible motherboard and you are set - as for graphics, maybe a Nvidia, I'm not sure how they go for drivers? Although it is a pain in the arse, and problems will arise all the time if you have meddling fingers... it is fun, and the machine you get will be far more powerful than any laptop.

But didn't you say you wanted a Laptop? Go the MBP it is a safe buy, very safe.

Oh yeah, except the winning, the burning, the power cables exploding, etc, etc, maybe wait until Rev B...

2 Cents.

Thanks for your answers.

I wish I could have the mobility of a laptop, but since I need to do serious Photoshop stuff, I need more accurate screen than any laptop offers. Therefore, I´m going to build a desktop tower. A laptop and a screen is rather expensive for my budget.

So, I´m thinking how powerful desktop can be built, e.g. is the x1600 or any more powerful graphics card supported at higher resolutions than 1280x1024?

first of all, if you saw, i support getting apple hardware if you want a powerful osx machine that can dual-boot, i just think that macs are overpriced and that apple makes you think that you are getting better hardware when you are *NOT*.

macs are overpriced and i think id get better hardware over a nice looking chassis. grab a dell inspiron e1705 with a 2.16 core duo/1-2gigs of ddr 667/100gb sata 7200rpm/7800 go/17 inch wuxga (super bright!) and compare it to a macbook pro, i think you'll find the dell as the undisputed winner (especially for graphics intensive work).

im not trying to bash apple here, i think their hardware performs very well and since most people do not require monster computers, an mbp is more than enough for them. im just saying that if you buy a laptop from dell/asus etc., you can get *BETTER* hardware (ofcourse you wont have full compatibility w/ dual booting unless you can code drivers)

The 2nd hand price of a mac or mac laptop is still higher than that for a pc or the most expensive PC laptop.

thankyou for proving my point.

im afraid i dont. unless you mean superior performance because of being able to add superior hardware

I think this just isn´t worth it and XP is probably my best choice, especially since Apple hasn´t complete the Intel transition yet (Photoshop, Maya etc aren´t native)

id still get an mbp if you really like os x. yes cs2 is not universal (and probably wil never be) but within 2 years, 99% of the applications will be universal and it will be worth it in the end. also, if you are not a professional, the performance hit you take with rosetta doesnt matter that much.

My dual (quad w/ hypertheading) Xeon does pretty well :gun:

That is an *AMAZING* system although wouldnt it been better if you had grabbed dual dual-core Opterons?

P.S.: Eventually you should upgrade that graphics card! Looks like it may bottleneck your amazing CPU setup in graphics intense applications.

Actually, I didn't buy it to be a Hackintosh. I bought it a couple of years ago and decided to kill Windows in favor of OSx86. It could use more RAM - and I would consider a new video card, but I think I'll wait for the MacVidia project to get further down the road. I tried a Radeon and even with QE/CI I wasn't impressed. I actually liked my cheapo nVidia card better. What would you recommend?

well the ati drivers included with os x (the non efi ones) are betas and are not optimized so you wont be able to get the full juice out of your card. I'm going to assume that with progressive releases of the callisto driver, you'll find better performance as omni will take efforts to optimize the driver. ofcourse, the macvidia project is shaping up well and it looks like np_ is going to get nvidia users full hardware accleration w/ qe/ci. ofcourse, for now, the ti 4600 is still a good card, id wait and see what future developments are like.
