Doesn't like to run supreme commander in bootcamp. Already cooked a hard drive doing that Hackintosh would be mainly used for school work but also play supreme commander and other games. TomCom
A 600W PSU is more than enough for any single high-end VGA card and there's no support for the GTX 275 yet. Both GTX 260 and GTX 280 work with Snow Leopard, and 285 will since Apple is going to sell it for Mac Pros, but I'm not so sure about the GTX 275. Don't buy one until you know it for sure. Gigabyte mobos are more compatible than Asus and cheaper, but maybe you like 'em black. cellcore9
Thanks for the help. The PSU probably is too high, the specs on the GTX 280, decided to go with that as I'm not too sure about the 275 either, says it wants a 550 watt minimum with at least 40A coverage on the 12V connector. So I backed it down to a 700, saved about 50 bucks. So I'm around 1150 USD for the build. I'll stick with the black ASUS board Do you guys think that this would be a setup that should run OSX no problem or does anyone foresee any problems? poopmonkey
Thanks for changing my mind on my future case. The Antec Three Hundred is damn sexy. Also, try to make sure that the heatsink will fit on your board. Also, I would really consider a Gigabyte board, I'm not sure how compatible this board is though. I THINK that people had success with this board. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/168593-new-i7-build/#findComment-1166962 Share on other sites

It is working very well for everyone here. I understand a partiality to a brand such as Asus, but for me if Im building a system for compatibility with an OS not really meant to run on my hardware, I would get what works best and is confirmed by the community. But good luck with your machine. Let us know how it works. Im not familiar with the new video cards working 100%. I hear support is coming, but a 4870/90 is 100% in OSX. cellcore9
There is a very good tech page on how to install osx on the Asus P6T board and from a couple people I have talked to on here that have the Asus P6T board they have pretty much solved all the issues with it and it is running very well for them. I dont really have anything with brand names... I've had a mac since I can remember... good old black and white mac's, played megaroids a lot on that one lol, had a 66MHz mac when I was about 8. What Gigabyte board would you suggest with the same kind of features as the Asus board? TomCom
The best one is the EX58-UD5 with 10 Sata plugs, onboard Clear CMOS and Start buttons, checkup lights and 3 PCI-e 16x—that are pretty useless for our purpose. The best value is the EX58-UD4 for about 200$. And read reviews and comments on newegg: I'm not a Gigabyte official! radov4n
There's a way to get gtx 275 working now, check http://netkas.org/ Not sure about P6T, might not be the most 10.5 friendly i7 board out there. I'd go with either UD5 or evga x58. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/168593-new-i7-build/#findComment-1167039 Share on other sites
cellcore9
Well... I'm looking at the Gigabyte mobos now. If I end up getting 2 GPU's does anyone know if SLI will affect the boot of OSX if I want to keep SLI enabled for windows? TomCom
I think you can disable one PCI-e slot in the Award bios of Gigabyte mobos. But that would probably mean go through the bios and load the good setup each time you want to change your OS. cellcore9
I've settled on using the gigabyte UD5 mobo. I did some more reading an installing OSX on it and it seems to handle the install process better than the asus mobo. One other question for you guys. If the i7 is overclocked to 3.6 or 3.8GHz what kind of heatsink would be good? TomCom
Better bang for the buck: Scythe Mugen 2 Best of all but pricey with at least one 120mm fan: Thermalright IFX-14 Between the two: Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/168593-new-i7-build/#findComment-1168544 Share on other sites
cellcore9
Thanks TomCom, I'll have to wait until I get the case and everything assembled to make sure there is enough room before I buy one. If there is enough room I'll probably go with the Scythe Mugen 2. TomCom
If your case is well known, type its name together with "mugen 2" and "fit". I'm sure you'll find out. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/168593-new-i7-build/#findComment-1169163 Share on other sites
cellcore9
Couple reviewers on newegg have the antec 300 case and it fits in theirs, so I should be good. Another question... The only monitor I have is an old apple 22" with the ADC connector. I'm looking at around 20 - 23" monitors, what's a good monitor? TomCom
I can't really help you much with monitors, sorry. Search for reviews. Basically, low-end displays use TN panels. They're fine for gaming but not so fine for everything else. Problem is S-IPS panels found in 24" iMacs are much more expensive. Dyckyj
A good 22" monitor is the dell 2209wa http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/product...mp;sku=320-7825 It uses a new type of panel called e-ips, basically a cheaper ips panel, thats still better than the normal tn panel. The only downside to ips monitors is than they usually have slower response times (5ms for the dell), not really good for gaming. r8f5e7
A good 22" monitor is the dell 2209wa http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/product...mp;sku=320-7825 I second that recommendation. No better 22'' monitor out there if you have both quality and price considered. TomCom
Wait: it's a VGA only display. It's looking low-end to me, though many Dell displays are good. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/168593-new-i7-build/#findComment-1171271 Share on other sites
cellcore9
It has a DVI connector and a VGA connector from what I read, I dont know, they have one at the best buy near me so I may have to go down and look at it, it looks like it has a hdmi input too but best buy says no... Kinda wish apple still sold their 20" display Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/168593-new-i7-build/#findComment-1171280 Share on other sites

cellcore9
Sounds like a pretty good monitor to me. Went down to bestbuy and looked at; looks great. I think I have pretty much everything picked out right now. Going to go with the UD5 mobo. I'm a couple bucks short of the total right now so it might be another couple weeks before I go ahead and get everything. Thanks for all your help.
