I got this problem when i tried to replace the io kext. CardassianVole
It happened to me yesterday when I had my DVD burner that I was using to install OS X set as the secondary slave. I put it as the secondary master and everything went fine. I am on an Nforce 4 though. Maybe that could help you. CrazyPigeon
"Still Waiting for Root Device" means that it can't find the driver for either your ide or sata controller, or your hard drive so therefore it can't boot. What kind of hard drive is this? CardassianVole
Try installing to a real partition using VMWare and then boot your laptop using that partition. -jordn-
hey, i finally got this to work in vmware using this guide. i then used Acronis OS Selector to locate my mac installation and attempt to boot from it. unfortunatley, i keep getting the 'still waiting on root device' error. i have booted using various flags, including the -v and -x ones. it still doesnt work... My hardware is: MSI K8N Neo4-F (nforce4 based) XFX 6800XT LG DVD-ROM and DVD-RAM drives on 1 ide, and an 80GB and 120GB HDDs on the other. the 80gb hard disk is the master, and has 2 partitions on; OSX is the first (type AF, 20GB) and windows media centre 2005 is on the other (type NTFS,56.3GB) could unhooking my DVD-ROM and RW resolve the problem do you think? jordn EDIT: nevermind, i unhooked the dvd-rw and my spare HDD and it still has the error. any suggestions? DickPeter
It doesnt work for me - Averatec 2155 laptop (AMD Turion - it workeed under 10.4.1 but was painfully slow, so I know the hardware is compatible) I still get "still waiting for root device." I'm trying to boot from the dvd and do a native install on a second partition (very necessary windows partition is on the first). I'm :censored2: ing stuck. Wolfmight
HP Pavilion dv5000 laptop here. AMD Turion64, ATI southbridge, ATI200x GFX. Installs and runs in VMWare, but it's very slow (as usual). Tried scousi's OnboardATA patch without any luck. I hear v.10.4.5 doesn't work with scousi's patch, but I don't wanna reinstall OSX to v10.4, apply the patch, and still get that blasted "root device" {censored}! Anyone else try downgrading to v10.4 with scousi's patch successfully being able to boot native? PM me if so. I would appreciate that very much Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/14836-what-means-by-still-waiting-for-root-device/#findComment-98602 Share on other sites
Nick Jacholson
I had this problem to, the best way out is to search for the actual JaS MacOS release and patch it with the actual ATI FIX both to find under the pirate bay or at the demonoid site by searching for JaS. MACCCS
I am using 10.4.5 Gho version, and after detect hardwares ,it stopped and said "still waiting for root device".What had happened? (Turion64 1.6G ,Northbridge is Ati rx480,Southbridge is ati SB400,Ati mobility X600 64MB, Sound : Realtek ALC 655) This Means your SATA or IDE interfce not being Recognized by OSX. Sata only recognized without patch in ICH5, ICH6,ICH7 Intel Chipset. All others have to patch Kext with your device ID and Device Vendor. JaS
The 10.4.7 iso has the ATI.ATA.Support package under the customize option at install. Select it when installing Os X.
