Can any one here in the know recommend a good webcam for OSx86?

Price is not the real issue for me, rather I want quality, compatibility and an integrated microphone.

It looks like some Logitech webcams might be good, but I am also wondering if it worth the hassle and expense to buy a used Apple iSight (since Apple no longer sells them)?

I have not got it yet, but I am about to order a Macally IceCam2. This should work perfect as its made for a mac and compatible with a PC. You can get them a few dollars cheaper on eBay, but buy it from where ever. I will let you know how it works on my system when I get it if you don't want to get it before you know it works. :D

IceCam2 $39.99

I've read good reports about this one -

Logitech Vision Pro

Built in mic, Mac compatibility but is pricier than some. It's the one I'd buy given the limited options out there if you want compatibility, mic and quality picture.

Yes, the Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac seems to be the webcam to get for OS X!

Here is a site which seems to have a current review of Mac webcams and they recommend it:

The Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac is at NewEgg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16826104234

But cheaper at Amazon.com now:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AOK7K...ASIN=B001AOK7KI

Thanks for the help... ordering now.

I think I read some bad things about the Macally IceCam2, you might want to double check before ordering.

  • 1 month later...

I have had my new Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac here in a box waiting to install... and finally did it.

I just spent a few minutes playing with this webcam on a Intel BadAxe1 Hackintosh with a vanilla 10.5.4 installation. It seems pretty decent and very easy to use. No drivers to install, it just uses whatever is built in to OS X apparently. As far as mechanics go, I was expecting a more clip-like attachment to my monitor, instead the webcam sort of just lays on it (no big deal). I recorded some movies to test it out, PhotoBoth and QuickTime Pro (serial required) both work out of the box with this webcam as does iChatAV and other popular IM clients.

The camera is supposed to capture up to 720p (1280 x 720), but QuickTime Pro seems to produce a "native" resolution of 1600 x 1200. The frame rate seems to be pretty slow at this resolution. Fast motion is blurry. I suppose this is normal for webcams and acceptable for $100 video camera, but it certainly is a serious limitation for use. Switching to 640 x 480 (which QuickTime Pro compresses with H.264) solves most of that problem.
