Successful install of iATKOS v5 10.5.7 on Del Inspiron 9300 with a Geforce Go 7800GTX. Note that this is the same for a similar configuration of a Dell XPS Gen2.

Dual booting Windows 7 RC1 and Mac OSX 10.5.7.

Get iATKOS 5i 10.5.5 for Intel (it's somewhere around there, look for it)

Use magic gparted for resizing your Windows install.

Create a primary partition as HFS+, keep as MBR.

Boot from iATKOS ISO

use Disk Utility to reformat as HFS+ (I choose to not use journaling to save on performance, but it's up to you.). KEEP PARTITIONS AS MBR!!! (default)

Before the install, the most important part, the CUSTOMIZE:

-PC_EFI_V9

-Intel SATA (no AHCI)

-Voodoo Kernel

-X86 ACPI (includes PS2 drivers for keyboard/touchpad)

-SMBIOS: Choose MacBook Air's.

-NTFS_3G if you choose to write to your /dev/sda1, where Windows should be.

-remove thermal kexts

-Broadcom 440 NIC, so you can hook up to the internet through ethernet, like the 1990's. :)

-DO NOT INSTALL ANY NVIDIA DRIVERS

For wifi:

-download and install iwidarwin from http://code.google.com/p/iwidarwin/ . it will install a GUI so you can select networks, since apple's framework is closed source and poorly documented, therefore it's not detected as an airport card. LIMITATIONS: will only connect to open networks. :(

after the install goes through, boot with the -x flag. the video card will not initialize since we didn't install nvinject.

Now to 10.5.6!! To get to 10.5.6, all you have to do is: (I put these steps down because I don't know if you have to go through .6 to get to .7. I've had to do incremental updates since I always do them when the new build comes out, but for someone starting from scratch I have little advice, yet.)

- install iATKOS 5i (10.5.5) as shown in this guide (skip down a few lines to where it says original post) and skip the nVidia fix.

- update to 10.5.6 using software update

- overwrite the new system.kext (found in /System/Library/Extensions/) with the custom kernel system.kext (found in /Library/Temp) with this command:

sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext.old; cp -r /Library/Temp/System9.5.0.kext /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext

- now open osx86tools and fix permissions/delete caches. I'm not sure how much this is necessary, but do it anyway. It worked for me.

- reboot. not sure if this is necessary, but again, this is how I got it working, so do it for good measure.

- if you have problems with the 10.5.6 software update, please see post #42

To get to 10.5.7, all you have to do is:

- Prep for upgrade by going to Software Update and commencing the download of .7

- Reboot. The first reboot did something strange, the computer rebooted on its own, but the second time it came up perfectly.

- replace the new system.kext with the custom kernel system.kext to avoid USB mounting problems:

sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext.old2; cp -r /Library/Temp/System9.5.0.kext /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext

- install the following kext with osx86tools if you have a kernel panic when mounting .dmg files. http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/384839/Drivers/...10.5.5.kext.zip. The parent link where I got that from (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=141415 has an alternate solution in case the dmg's keep crashing your box.

- following is the steps to get QE/CI working.

NVIDIA FIX

-download the nvidia 10.5.2 kexts from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/leo...csupdate10.html

-download pacifist at http://www.charlessoft.com/

-open leopard graphics update package with pacifist, right click on package and choose 'install to default location', and overwrite everything it asks

-with osx86tools http://######.com/osx86tools/, reset caches and fix permissions. I always pick the "Repair Permissions" "Set Extensions Permissions" "Clear Extensions Cache" "Clear User Application Cache" and "Clear System Application Cache" for completeness.

-download nvinstaller v.41 from http://scottdangel.com/blog/?page_id=20

-when running nvinstaller v.41, choose "latest kexts and framework" and "laptops (Go or M) GPU" options. you will have to expand the greyed out item to see the latter. Uncheck the vanilla option.

reboot and voi-effing-la!

let me know if there's any questions at jilipoya ( at ) hot mail ( d o t ) com

Thank you, it worked great for me, I was stuck with Kalyway 10.5.1 and now I'm a bit more up to date thanks to your guide.

No problem. It took many hours of tweaking since there was no guide out there, but got it done.

If you are able to get the software update to 10.5.6 working please let me know so we can update the guide. I wasn't able to install Leopard without using one of the custom kernels. We should still be able to go to 10.5.6, but it will take some modifications to some system files.

Thanks for this! I'm new to the scene this week, and it's been "fun" trying to get my head around all this. I actually have an XPS M170, which is the successor to the XPS Gen2. I've got some questions for you:

  • When I use the Voodoo kernel, I don't have sound. If I use the tohkernel, I do. My sound is reported in Linux as:

00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller [0401]: Intel Corporation
   82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller [8086:266e] (rev
   03)

  • My ethernet doesn't work with the Broadcom 440x drivers. It's reported as this:
    </li></ul> 03:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5705M_2
       Gigabit Ethernet [14e4:165e] (rev 03)

I'm currently trying to parse this thread to see if I can get this going: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=4987

  • In my Customize section, I added "Speedstep a" and "Laptop Battery". They don't cause a crash, but I haven't got around to seeing if they help with anything either. Have you tried them? I know that I have an accurate battery meter in the top right hand corner. Do you get that without the kext?

Again, thanks for this. It's hard to find recent posts on this generation of laptop. You can find all kinds of stuff relating to this hardware back in 2006, but not much recently. Once I'm fully up and running, I'll post my soup to nuts procedure for the m170.

Hm, the M170 is different enough to my computer, such as the second core. I don't recall setting speedstep in customize, but I did do laptop battery, and it shows. my battery is shot though, and it's hard to tell if it's being accurate. Let me give it a few minutes to see how it updates...

...hovered over it and says "10 min left", which makes sense since it's messed up...

...works great!

If the tohkernel is the one working for you, then by all means you should stick with it :-)

Try this http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?act...ost&id=1185 for the ethernet, but that's for 5701.

I have the same setup as the others with the nvidia go 6800 as well. went through all the customization settings above, it finished the install, told me to reboot. after a few seconds of showing the logo and animated rotator, shows me a greyed out screen with 4 languages stating that I need to restart my computer, to hold down the power button for a few seconds, etc...

i reboot, and the cycle continues. any suggstions (using the iAtkos v5i) and i've selected the nvidia laptop drivers from customization screen.

I have tried the above setup as well on my i9300. install finished up, after rebooting it showed the apple loader, and then various shades of blue screen was displayed. I've attempted connecting the external LCD through vsub, but nothing was showing up even after another reboot on external LCD, only the laptop's original LCD shows blue screen that on occasion changes hue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

did you used the "Ideneb 1.4"?

did you used the DVI port to connect to the tv / LCD ?

Anything wrong when you put -v at booting?

only weird thing for me was there was like a spam of "appleDecrypt"

Did you installed Darwin or Nvinject at the customize?

remember to use the 256mb setup on darwin / nvinjectgo

Hi, thanks for replying.

I used the iDeneb 1.4

there's something weird with DVI port on laptop, none of the dvi cables can fit into it for some reason.

I've tried those converters from vga to dvi as well, for some reason the part where there is a - in it does not go in, dunno. that's why i used the dsub/vga port to connect to monitor/tv.

i did chose the darwin 256 on my first try.

did not see any errors with -v, will try to re-install again, will see if something shows up.

Any idea if i can use the vga port instead of DVI?

-- tried to install again, got a crash report after the installation completed, screen attached.

Update to the above post.

I had a success in choosing the SpeedStep kernel 9.2 in order to boot into the OS.

The issue now is that

1. every other time it gets an error (maybe due to nvidia driver, not sure) system panic. i'll take a pic and upload it soon.

2. when in the OS, both the screen on the lap top and the attached 19" Monitor have picture, but the monitor is the one that has the bar on the bottom, when i got to screen settings it shows the rez for monitor at 1280x1024 and for laptop 1900x1200. if i switch the arrangement to mirroring then nothing shows up on the laptop screen, only on the monitor. in dual mode i can drag stuff around from one to another without issues.

my question is do I need to try installnig the nvidia fix now to get the laptop screen working alone.

would that fix the issue with the boot panics?

thanks!

if you could make it to the 2 screens showing, 1 with the bars and the dock and the other screen as a "extension"

then you can continue by updating the system software.

then you can do the nvidia fix and the other steps i mentioned.

the porpuse for the dvi was for making the install sucesfull by completing the info, since the laptop lcd alone doesnt work.

Okay... i have it on my 9300 and i know fluent english... so let me just explain it a little better on installation on a Dell 9300 to the point... all credit goes to javi... and goes to castle... but i just want to make it easier for people... please let me know if this helped you at all!

Okay here goes....

!!!!!!!!!!!!!THIS ONLY WORKS IF YOU HAVE A SEPERATE MONITOR HOOKED UP TO YOUR DVI OUT ON YOUR LAPTOP DO NOT TRY INSTALL UNTIL YOU HAVE THIS!!!!! VERY IMPORTANT!!!!

!!!!!!!THIS ONLY WORKS WITH DELL 9300 Pentium M with Nvidia GeForce Go 6800!!!!!

!!!!!!! I DID 8 DIFFERENT INSTALLS ON MY DELL 9300(poor hard drive)!!!!!!!!

I did not dual boot only one operating system on my machine 10.5.6 with update capability(its a Depple)

Step 1. CLEAN INSTALL iDENEB V14 ( I partitioned it GUID) Erase all....

Step 2. Customize your install exactly as I write here

PS2 Fix Mouse ONLY!

AC97 Audio

ICHx Fixed Chipset

9.5.0 Voodoo Kernel (great job guys!)

AppleBC440x for Ethernet

Broadcom for wireless....(Go buy a damn broadcom miniPCI for wifi $20, Works f'n great)

Under AppleSMBIOS pick nothing leave them all blank

Under Fixes.... IOUSB Family Fix... Seatbelt Fix...Battery Manager

Under Video....NVDARWIN 256mb don't use NVinjectGO

Applications pick all of em! Why not!

Netbook.... Nothing!!!

Step 3. Install.... (SKIP THE CHECKING OF DRIVE THING SAVE TIME!)

Step 4. With your DVI hooked up you should hear the intro music and see the intro for Leopard in great quality!!!

Enter your info and get to the desktop! Make sure you have your ethernet line plugged in.... Check it out you have Leopard on your monitor... but how do i get it to my laptop where i want it?..... Follow these instructions exactly and you will have no problems at all!!!!

Step 5. Click on the apple in the top left corner of your screen and click Software Update. Update your Software.

Step 6. You will be prompted to restart... you must restart....

Step 7. After you dell boots back up go to Safari and download the file on this link....

http://www.sendspace.com/file/xw1dfs

Step 8. once this is downloaded DO NOT INSTALL!!!! CLOSE INSTALL WINDOW...Right Click on the download.... OPEN WITH.... PACIFIST... When Pacifist opens you have to wait a few seconds.... after right click on the package in Pacifist and choose Install to Default Location... Overwrite all when it asks!

Step 9. Once that is done open Applications...Ideneb Tools... and access OSx86 Tools... check Fix Permissions and reset all of the caches

Step 10. DoNot Restart yet... Download NVInstaller V41 from here (rapidshare)

http://Scottdangel.com/blog/?page_id=20 Remember NVinstaller V41 no others!

Step 11 Once this is done it will autorun VERY IMPORTANT WHAT YOU PICK HERE Check off the following:

Latest Kexts (should be selected for you..if not check it off(its the top one))

256mb Vanilla

Go cards(mobile)GPU (that is just one selection)

Click Install

DO NOT RESTART!!!!!! NOT YET!!!!!!

Step 12 this is where you need to pay very close attention we are doing this on the desktop!

Step 13. Open Finder put it in the pane view(third one from the left i think)

open System

open Library

open Extensions

Scroll down to NVDAResman.kext right click copy it and paste on the desktop

Do the Same to NVDANV40Hal.kext right click copy and paste on the desktop

Step 14. close all finder windows

Step 15 Right click on NVDAResman.kext click on show contents

Step 16 open the contents folder double click on info.plist so that it opens in text editor

scroll down to where you can see the device ids, don't erase any! just add yours in at the end yours is 0x00c810de.

once you have done that close the info.plist and click save.

Do the same for NVDANV40Hal.kext Step 14-16

once that is done....

Step 17. open up finder click on applications... click on iDENEB tools.... kext helper...

Drag both of your edited kexts into the box of kext helper... punch in your password and push the button...

Hi, I'm hoping you or someone else can help me out. I've tried close to 7 installs, and at this point all out of patience. I have the Dell Inspiron 9300 with nvidia go 6800. 1gb memory, 80gb hd.

Went through the installation and selections steps several times, all is well until sometime when I need to get to the extensions folder and start copying the files, any manipulations with finder or file system at one point or another end up with panic freeze. I'm attaching the screenshot, but it's pretty much the same thing each time. I have the DVI monitor connected as you can probably guess sinse I'm able to fill out all the prerequisites

I'll try to submit it to the iDeneb or voodoo team for review, but if someone has any constructive suggestions they will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

that error i only got it when i tried to play with the display settings.

when i tried to get wich monitor was who, "When it displays the numbers 1 or 2".

but apart from that i dont know why you are getting that error only using finder, drag & drops... =x

are you using the nvdarwin?

I would like to be of some help for real but i dont know much of troubleshooting on these things..

By the way dont be mad if you isntalled the 10.5.6 like 7 times...

Most of the people that got it succesfully installed got it to work after 7+

sure its a pain to figure out "what i did wrong or different to not make it work"...

but its awsome when you finally got it to work.

by the way does the problem happens after you register the OSX, or after you install the grafics.kext ?

I don't believe i was. I assume it's one of the installation options and not something after the installation complete?

I've selected all the options listed in Dell9300w/Leo10.5 installation guide for the same hardware I have. and it's by far the furtherst i got in the install vs. all the other installers (iAtkos, etc...)

I'll try disabling PowerManagement.kext option in my next attempt (in about 5 mins), but dunno if this will help. to answer the post above by javi, i have selected the ndarwin 256 for vid card option. again, all items selected word by word as in Dell9300w/Leo10.5 post.

Thanks again!

When you guys were running the iAtkos and iDeneb builds, were you disabling the PowerManagement kext? That is essential to the installation.

could not find this option anywhere in my iDeneb 1.4 installation customize options. the closest thing i saw was BatteryManager option that was suppose to be used if you have a laptop, which is the case for me. if you can specify where exactly do i disable this, i'd give it a try.

thanks!
