Hi, I was thinking about various way to install OSX onto an NC10 without having an external DVD drive. I'm reluctant to have to buy an external DVD.

Has anyone managed to load the OSX.ISO file onto a Sandisk Cruzer (either 8gb or 16gb verison) and get it to boot the OSX installation - just like a real external DVD ?

This can be done, depending on the distro used... I've had luck with iDeneb 10.5.5 & iATKOS 5i.

Here is what I did:

Using disk utility:

1) Formatted USB (I used GUID)

2) Used 'Restore' option....

drag & drop iso image to Source, drag & drop USB drive to Destination

3) Clicked Restore

took about 20-30 mins

At this point the image was restored, but not bootable. I used the Chameleon 1.0.11 Installer to install the bootloader to the USB....

Booted to USB and installed. Went from 30 minute install to less than 5 mins. Soooo much nicer!

Good Luck!

Info on "how to" was obtained on this forum...

I tried a few different U3 tools to get it to work. Ultimately the problem seems to be that for ISO files sizes > 4gb, each of the ISO load programs fail to create the image properly on the USB CD/DVD drive. They appear to work, but the mounted CDs don't boot.

I suspect these programs format the drive FAT32 which maxes out at 4GB.

I did manage to get other CDs to boot ok (Hiren Boot CD for example) - which is handy to have when doing all the NC10 partition stuff.

The link below is an updated version of "Universal Customizer" for U3 capable USB keys - let's you write custom ISOs to your USBKEY CD. Also this version fixed a bug in the original version which cripples your USB Key to 4GB. So it sorted out my 8GB Sandisk Cruzer Contour. This really is a neat program. As I say, doesn't appear to work for ISO > 4GB though.

PS I ended up using the ddmac partition trick to boot the OSX iso, so that particular issue has gone.

This didn't work for me. Disk Utility said something about not being able to scan the source. Doesnt' seem to like .iso files.
