Jeremyreid
Hey, I have a Mac Mini 1.33ghz G4. It has leopard on and works fine. I only really use it for browsing and my music/videos, I do all my heavy duty stuff on my windows pc. Is it worth my upgrading to a intel core 2 Mac mini or should I leave it? Synaesthesia
The Core 2 Duo is much faster than the G4. But unless you are very unhappy with the G4, I say leave it, if you just use it for videos & music...It's up to you. Or try to Hackintosh your PC, or a Core 2 Duo PC. It's just as fast. Jeremyreid
Ok thanks for the info, but I would like a more determined answer. Synaesthesia
The Mac Mini Core 2 Duo can play back 1080p videos, if this is important, go for it. It is about 4-5x faster. It makes a big difference for more CPU-intensive tasks, but for playing music, 480P and 720P videos, and surfing the web, it's just fine! What else do you want to know? thasp
I would leave it. The G4 is a practical joke compared to modern CPUs, but for web browsing, it is fine. Khan_Man
The G4 processors were very powerful. I'm always amazed at how many Gigflops they turn in. For example my duel G4 1000 benched about 7-8 gigaflops. Amazing! My P4 3.0 gig does about 5-6. My C2D (e6600) does about 17 so it is a big jump. If U want your computer for surfing and light duty stuff, stick with the G4 for another year or two. If U want to combine machines (which was a big motivator for me) or do power work on Mac (encoding video on Mac is so nice) I'd upgrade. blazingangel1986
This link should give you a very clear head but i agree with everybody else make the upgrade and you will see your mac in a whole new light Intel vs PPC Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/140010-g4-vs-intel-core-2-is-it-worth-me-upgrading/#findComment-993935 Share on other sites
MaaseyRacer
When they update the mini in the near future I would pick up a new one. The Intel CPUs run circles around the old PowerMac processors. SpeedfreaK
certainly do not buy the current mac mini because its a total ripoff! there are much rumors that apple will anounce a new mini in januari/februari with new processors, larger hd's and probably 9400 graphic card (since they upgraded even the air to that one). Berzerker
Wait until Macworld in January. Today, it was confirmed that new iMacs and Mac Minis will use upgraded Intel processors, along with the nVidia chipsets and 9400M graphics. A Nonny Moose
If the G4 Mac can still do its job, then keep the G4 Mac.
