Just got most of it today from NewEgg.

Took me 8 hours to build start-to-OS-install. Yes, I'm slow - I was being very careful,

and It's amazing how 1 too-large screw in the wrong place can slow you down.

Here She is:

Case > Norco 4U Rackmount RPC-470 : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811219020

CPU > Intel E8500 C2D

HSF > Thermalright Ultima 90 (Excellent - Ice cold after about 2 hours of use - BIOS says CPU is 20C)

Mobo >GIGABYTE GA-EP45-DS4P : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128346

RAM > 8GB G.SKILL 4GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)

PSU > Ultra X3 1000 Watt

Vid Card (future) > EVGA 896-P3-1267-AR GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 Superclocked 896MB :

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130400

Vid Card (present) > Asus nVidia 7300GT 256MB PCI Express

Optical Drive > SAMSUNG SH-S223F SATA

Optical Drive > Sony Optiarc 20x Dual Layer DVD+R PATA

Monitor > LG W2600H 26" (Yummmy)

Keyboard > Macally Black iCekey

Mouse > Various, depending on my mood

OS > iAtkos 5i - Leo 10.5.5 (AWESOME!!!! - Thank you!!!)

This would make for a great Sig! ;)

Right now, I've only changed some basics in the BIOS, too tired to mess much with it.

CPU is underclock @ 2.83GHz. I plan to burn it in for about 3-4 days @ stock 3.13GHz speed, then

the fun will start :D

Even @ 2.83 it feels snappy. I'm hoping to get up to 4.2.

I can put a max of 12 HDDs into this system if I want. The case is 25" Deep and there are 9 fans including

my CPU fan. 2 120mm Scythes up front, 4 80mm stock fans in the middle Fan Bar, & 2 80mm in the rear.

CPU Fan is Nexus 92mm.

Gotta say, iAtkos 5i was super easy/compatible to install - LOVE IT!!!

If there is interest, I can post some pix tomorrow.

Now, it's off to bed . . .

PS: Sleep sort of works. It goes to sleep & actually wakes up by me hitting the power button, but I get crappy-looking text after it wakes.

tell me if you can overclock your E8500 with 8gb ram :)

Give me a couple days . . .

Or maybe to tomorrow . . .

PS: I've got the E0 stepping :) , so 4.2GHz or bust!

Hi Vlad,

I just ordered a machine using basically the same parts and was planning on using iAtkos5.1 as well. Do you think you would be able to let us all know what packages you selected?

kind regards,

C

Incredible rig... did the Geforce 260 worked ootb or need a NVinject? Is QE/CI enabled and all that? Lots of HDD....

I actually sold the 260 and bought a 1GB 9800GTX+, since there are no drivers/support for the 260 at this time

and I got tired of waiting for it.

My question is:

Can you boot off Leopard from the rocketraid 2640x4?

I am just one step away from buying it.

I was able to boot off the 2640X4 by using Copy Cat X to clone my 230GB Maxtor drive to it,

but then I lost about 40 GB of capacity from the RAID array, so I wasn't happy with this.

Also, the 2640X4 emits a high-pitched tone when the system comes out of sleep and the only

way to get rid of it is to reboot the system, so I'm not too happy with it.

If you can deal with not using sleep, it's a pretty fast card. I'm sure you can use INSTAHackintosh 1.0

method to install a system to a RAID array using this card, I've just been too lazy to try.

I'm actually looking to sell the 2640X4 - it's on eBay right now, since I don't like the "sleep issue".

Vista 64-bit drivers suck.

Have you considered using ssd's instead of the hard drives? Prices are falling...

I have, but the capacity just isn't there yet - maybe another 6 months.

Plus some of the controllers that SSDs use are {censored}, especially JMicron.

The Intel X25 SSDs are the only one's I'd consider buying right now, & they are too much $$$

($500+ for 64GB).

But it would be something to brag about, no?! I see what you mean about the price of those Intels, yikes! I've seen the cheaper ones as low as $200 for 64gb and $400 for 128gb, but I guess those wouldn't work well for you. The extremes are for servers, and note they say you could replace 50! high speed server hdd with ONE of these, {censored} they must be good! http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Sea...&CatId=4147

With your CPU and Mobo, I can't see any reason why you shouldn't run the vanilla kernel. It'll allow you to upgrade easily and will likely give you the least headaches going forward. I used the same installation DVD with you and have it running great on the vanilla kernel with a Q6600 and GA-EP45-UD3P board.

Pretty nice but I don't see why you would use the 9.5.0 Voodoo Kernel if you have an Intel Core 2 Duo.

These support the vanilla install (unmodified OS X kernel) and allow you to do updates without patching. I've installed iATKOS v5i myself (without kernel) and I updated to 10.5.6 using the built-in Software Update without modifications and I have no issues what so ever! It works perfectly, this is a HUGE difference and comfort.

I suggest you don't install a kernel and life will be A LOT easier when it comes ot updates...

One other thing, you selected 2 drivers for SATA/IDE, you're pretty lucky your install works because normally when selecting 2 different drivers of the same you'll get a kernel panic. Intel AHCI SATA alone should do.

Just a tip, hope you can do something with it.

You've got an awesome system besides that ;-)
