Staphyl
Hello, I am kinda disgusted with my card not being supported with video CI and QE. So i am in the neighborhood and looking to buy an ATI X1300 PCI-e. It's only $87 and it is fully supported. However, on the IRC nvidia_user tells me that it only has 4 pipelines. WHereas the X1600 has 12 pipelines. What will the difference be with each card? AND Will Basic UI functions like Expose, Dashboard, and Screensaver work at full speed?? Thanks, Staphyl Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/13337-which-ati-card-whould-i-buy/ Share on other sites
Glenn
I have an ATI X1300 card and I only get it to work in VESA 3.0 I've tried almost about everything i can to get it to work but have not succeded. I have tried to patch the famous Radoen kext files and also tried to use the ATIX1000.kext file (and probably patch that one also if I could find the device id using hex editor.. but i couldn't)... But I'm glad if someone have got the X1300 to work.. Thanks, Staphyl I've gotten a Saphhire Radeon X1600 about a two months ago and have been successfull to run it rather smoothly with the X1000 driver. It costed around 159€ retail. I can't say that it's a beast but it runs with no hassle XOS. I've compiled some simple how-to's for it: http://schrepfler.blogspot.com/2006/03/aft...all-it-was.html http://schrepfler.blogspot.com/2006/03/it-...-files-and.html http://schrepfler.blogspot.com/2006/03/ive...ay-to-edit.html Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/13337-which-ati-card-whould-i-buy/#findComment-85472 Share on other sites
schrepfler
Is there some sort of benchmark for the MacOSX (I'm interested mostly in graphic card benchmarks) and is there a comparison list between cards? It could be an interesting topic to start where people post their scores. Staphyl
Well, it says in the wiki that the X1300 was able to load right out of the box, the PCI-e if i am correct. Search around the wiki and i think that you will find it. It also says that the X1600 has artifacts. The X1300 doesn't. Also, schrepfler how smooth does that X1600 run? Like a real mac. That smooth?? I have no doubt that the DVDs will run fine. Also, could some one PM me one of those infamous K-E.X*T^S?? That was i can install it right away. Thx. AndrewH
I'm thinking about the ATI PCI-E X600XT, any comments on that? I've seen some other people say it doesn't work so great :-X Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/13337-which-ati-card-whould-i-buy/#findComment-86200 Share on other sites

(in VESA 3.0 mode ), only had to change the resolution in plist. How about QE and CI... nope I changed the device id in plist, and boom! kernel panic.. ..getting real tired of it... tried about anything i can think of.. munky
my X1800XL PCI-E worked straight out of the box, CI, QE and OpenGL, no res change, some mouse artefacts. arenared: i can get a max of 1280x1024 - can you hit more with your X1800XT ? i've heard of X1600 users gettnig 1600x1200... jackt283
I can get 1600x1200 on my x1600 pro pci-e. Got it to work by adding device id 0x71C21002 to the ATIRadeonX1000.kext. CI and QE work, expose and dashboard are super quick. Scrolling is super responsive. Pretty much awesome, except mouse artifacts all round - no accelerated cursor sucks. dripple
Hmm... I also think about a new card, but if I read all off this topics here, I'll step back. Most of you say that your cards are supported by VESA 3.0 only. For my very OLD Matrox G450 this is true too. It's super fast (btw. faster than in native windows mode!) and I NEVER(!!) had any artifacts. The only thing I miss is fullscreen support for DVD, games, screen savers. It seems that there only a little number of cards out there who really support this. And even if I find a card that seems to be supported, other poeple say that it isn't. dripple Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/13337-which-ati-card-whould-i-buy/#findComment-86576 Share on other sites
munky
no artefacts under VESA3.0 is not surprising - artefacts are only occouring in ATI setups which have QE. dripple
Yep, I know. That means: Buy an ATI card and get artifacts At the moment, I'm dealing with an ATI Radeon 9800. This seems to be the most reliable card for Mac OS X at the moment (for the price of 90€ to 100€ for the 256 MB version) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/13337-which-ati-card-whould-i-buy/#findComment-88125 Share on other sites
