I have a blue and white G3. It has a hard drive that is 9 gig ( I think it is SCSI) It is Quantum Vicking PHXWS 656-0638.

I want to get rid of the main 9 gig hard drive.

I have the operating system disk of 10.3. I would like to install IDE hard drive. I have 20 to 60 gig drives.

My question is can I install IDE as the main drive and get total rid of the 9 gig? How do I do it.

Other spec on the machine are listed -CMD 646u2-402 (ka62)

- Apple Computer Inc 1999 -820-1049-a is on the motherboard

- Power Mac G3 Series

- CPU Type – Power PC 750 (82.2)

- Number of cpu is one

- 12 Cashe per cpu

- Memory is ram 768 MB

- Bus Speed 100 MHZ

- Boot Rom verision 1.1.1f4

Thanks

The Blue and White G3's are stupidly easy to replace anything. Just open the case (easy) and replace the drive.

Those G3's are ATA drives. I might suggest getting Mactracker as a software option for identifying how to upgrade your Mac. If you want a pure internet solution, then try Other World Computing (I've already set it up to show the G3 models if the link works properly).

That link doesn't work properly, but I went through and here is the only hard drive that it came up with:

Its a 7200RPM WDC 80GB drive for $45. I don't think that's a very good deal considering I can get a 500GB Western Digital Caviar with 16MB cache/7200RPM/SATAII 3Gbps for less than $100

Hi Jennifer.

A little research indicates something odd.

A Quantum Viking 9.1g drive appears to be a SCSI drive, as you suspect.

The Blue&White G3 supported IDE (aka ATA 33) drives.

Unfortunately, the early Revision 1 units had IDE controller problems that prevented use of newer drives such as ATA66, ATA100, ATA133. A lot of the G3s had Ultra ATA, SCSI or SATA controllers installed to correct this.

Could this G3 have had a SCSI card and the Quantum added at some point in its history? This was a common refit for Revision 1 G3s.

the IDE controller should still be useable, and the largest supported IDE drive should be 137gb. For all practical purposes this limits you to a 120gb hard drive. But you have to set the drive to disable UDMA if your G3 is a Revision 1.

If you do have a SCSI card installed, you would probably be limited to a 120gb SCSI drive.

Or you could replace it with an Ultra ATA card or even a SATA controller card. Probably still a 120gb limit though.

Possibly not. I don't know what exactly limits the Drive size. If it's only the drive controller, you may be able to use larger drives.

Here's a neat article with pictures that I came across:

Good Luck

and

Have Fun!
