u1m2
I installed MacOS X 10.4.1(not so sure but it must have been the first one out) on my AMD Athlon64 system and I had no sound, no sata and no ethernet as well as no 3d acceleration, which meant no internet, no music and no quality DVD playback. So I deleted it as it was installed on an old 20Gig ide drive anyway. I have a few extra bucks right now and I wanted to buy another PC anyway for downloads and other stuff that I don't want to do with my gaming rig. My initial thoughts were to use linux but then I thought to check out the wiki for updates and stuff. Now I want to buy hardware 99% compatible with MacOS X (10.4.1 or 10.4.4/5) and I am hoping you will help me pick the right hardware at the right cost. I don't mind tweaking or hacking the system as long as there are clear instructions and a high rate of success using these methods. I know there are many threads similar to mine but I would appreciate if you could help me with simple clear instructions on what works and what I need to do, to get what's not working, working (geez what a weird sentence). 1- Motherboard : MicroATX much preferred due that I want to use it in a Aspire Q-Xpack, I believe the mobo is the main deal since the chipset determines sata, sound and ethernet i.e all goodies that I want. Asus P5GD1-VM (with DVI add-on thingy if it's usable) Asus P5LD2-VM (with DVI add-on as well) Asus has its own DVI-out card but can I use another because I don't know if this works with P5LD2-VM. 2- Processor : I want to go with Celeron in the short term, I don't think I will need dual core power here as I do have a PC to be dual coreing anyway. Celeron D336 and OC it a little maybe. I don't know if 64-bit works or if there is a reason I should not buy a 64-bit processor. Using standard sata drives, Asus? dvd-burner (I am all open for suggestions), 1GB Memory (less would be fatal from what I read) If this goes right and I am fully comfy with MacOS X and available software, I plan to buy a PowerMAC when Maya and Photoshop are available as fat binaries. Thank you all, I really appreciate the help edit : I want to know one more thing, is the 945G motherboard supported with 10.4.1, especially graphics unit GMA950, because last time I was around in these forums it didn't work out of the box. If so can someone link me to a solution for GMA950 with QE and CI ? MacApprentice
Here's my perfectly working setup (VERY fast): - Asus P5LD2-VM Motherboard - INTEL P4 D 920 2.8 GHz BOX - Asus TM-231 case ( Nice MicroATX case ) - 2xCorsair PC5400 512MB DDR2 XMS2 (in dual channel) - Seagate 120Go 7200 RPM S-ATAII - Nec 4450 DVD burner. You can safely put slower RAM but I suggest you don't go lower than a Celeron D 351 or 346 for the cpu. (cause those have SSE3 and all the thing needed by OSX without patch) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/11255-out-to-buy-hardware-for-macos-x-need-recommendations/#findComment-70714 Share on other sites
FullMetal
If you want a good wifi card go for a WMP54GS. I would also recommend a Pioneer DVR-109 DVD-RW drive (Apple Shipped/Supported) Aslo, take a look at my signature! A Nonny Moose
The best hardware for OS X is (get ready to groan) Apple supplied hardware. This way, you're not hacking the OS to force it to work. If so can someone link me to a solution for GMA950 with QE and CI ? A 10.4.3, 4, or 5 install would be better. 10.4.1 can't run most official uni bins because they were compiled to run on 10.4.3 or newer. u1m2
Thanks for all the responses, Can you also give me your thoughts on Asus P5GD1-VM, can I safely buy this motherboard ? I am trying to limit by expenses because it turns out I Will also buy a display for this rig, and P5LD2-VM costs me 30$ more than P5GD1-VM. I will also get osx 10.4.5. @A Noony Moose, aren't you in the wrong forum/wiki/website for making these sort of comments, this build is not a mission critical workstation, it is just an internet/multimedia rig, I can always go with windows/linux if things don't work out. That is not the case when buying Apple hardware, is it? This rig is upgrade friendly which is the least you can say for Macs in this price range as well. Please read carefully what I wrote in the original post about possibly possibly buying a Powermac and why I am not buying it now. DS
The P5GD1-VM worked flawlessly for me, sound, LAN, SATA, etc. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/11255-out-to-buy-hardware-for-macos-x-need-recommendations/#findComment-71161 Share on other sites

MacApprentice
The only thing you get with P5LD2 and the P5GD1 can't do is the dual core cpu support. So think wiesly about it if you want to upgrade your Mac one day...
