izzysanime
Hi, I'm building a computer just to run Mac OS. I'm looking for a card that is less than $100, and i found EVGA 512-P2-N756-TR GeForce 8600 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130292 Now, I noticed others on this forum having to modify the system for some 8600 cards to work. Is it fairly simple to do so, or does anyone have a recommendation for a graphics card (with DVI) under $100 that will work? A card that supports dual screens would be great to . zuz_242
i had a leadtek 8600gt an it ran really smooth, dual screen with dvi. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/112448-should-i-get-an-nvidia-8600/#findComment-796188 Share on other sites
vbetts
For about $117(Just some over your budget) you can get the 8800 GS. But for under $100, the 8600 is a done deal. izzysanime
SO, did either of you need to modify the OS X install? Is there a huge difference between the 8600 and 8800? vbetts
BIG difference. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/112448-should-i-get-an-nvidia-8600/#findComment-797073 Share on other sites
resiroth
If it is only for MAC and not dual boot that is fine. However if you hope to dual boot into windows and play games you need an 8800GT. For a cheap 8800GT I'd recommend: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814121224 It's 130 after rebate and you also get a free company of heroes game and a leather CD wallet which for me is worth 30 bucks. In terms of windows gaming the 8600GT can't hold a candle to the 8800GT and the 8800GT will be able to play upcoming games very well as well. I've never had a problem with newegg's rebates. izzysanime
Well, i dont plan on using it as a dual boot system, but plan on using Parallels or vmware fusion to run windows. I would also play mac games. that card is $90 bucks more than the one I was looking at. hmmm. It does have dual dvi though. vbetts
You wouldn't need a GT, but it would be nice. A 8800 GSO would do you fine, it doesn't have the full 256-bit memory as the 8800 GT does, or all the shaders, but it's better than the 8600, way better. resiroth
Well if you're playing games like WC3 or SC2 or RTS games there won't be a difference. If you are playing games like Unreal tournament 2008 or call of duty 4 say, it will. Company of heroes is a pretty good game I here too. It's 70 bucks difference but you should know that in terms of gaming the 8600GT is already struggling to run games and it won't get any better. The 8800GT has very good support I hear ( they do put it into their own systems ) but I'm not an expert on that stuff. An 8800GS should be ok too but not as good. I'd go for the 8800GS if you really can't afford the price jump to the 8800GT though. Here's a good deal if you want COD4 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150295 50 dollars ( 40 dollars for the game ) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/112448-should-i-get-an-nvidia-8600/#findComment-797264 Share on other sites
izzysanime
I found an 8600 that had a fanless cooling heatsync on it. is there an 8800 with one? I'm trying to make my system silent. sarahbau
I think the 8600 will be just fine. If you aren't running the latest and greatest of games, there isn't really a need to get the 8800GT. I had a 7600GT in my hackintosh, and it was just fine for stuff like WoW, but I wasn't playing anything more demanding. NewEgg has a fanless Gigabyte 8600GT for $49 after rebate - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814125070 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/112448-should-i-get-an-nvidia-8600/#findComment-797987 Share on other sites
izzysanime
I saw that particular card, but its only 256mb and the heat sync looks like it is made out of plastic. I found the only one that was made out of copper.
