Has anyone upgraded their stardard Macbook pro Hard drive with a 320 offering by Western DIgital, samsung or toshiba? Please share your experience and problems as i found out that WD has a higher power consumption than the rest but better performance (marginal).

please advise on hd upgrade options.

If you want better performance, you'll need a 7200RPM hard drive. Other than that, all you'll get is more space. I've upgraded my 120GB stock to this 200GB 7200RPM 16MB cache hard drive: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/SEAGATE%20OWC/ST9200420ASG/

Measly little $125 for that kind of an upgrade.

Well for my case space is what i'm looking for... just in this matter i am wondering which Manufacturer to go with. furthermore, 320 is not an option availabe via apple, is there a reason for this? anyone has any experience upgrading their HD to a 320 one??

Thanks

I would attempt this but i'm worried that I'd seriously mess up a 1700 laptop

I wouldn't suggest you attempt unless you've done it before if you MBP is still in warranty. It is quite easy, but why void your warranty? Just get a nice 2.5 external Firewire enclosure, pop in one of those 320 drives, and drop it in your laptop bag to store all those big files on. They weigh next to nothing and you can use it with multiple computers. I have three. One in my laptop bag for personal storage, one usb2 one it my road kit for imaging customers hard drives and storing all my repair utils, and one that I take out of the safe deposit box monthly and do backups of all my critical data. Handy little buggers.
