Weebs Posted April 2, 2007 Share Posted April 2, 2007 Right now I'm pretty set on buying a MacBook Pro. I'm currently using a Intel iMac 17", Intel Core Duo (Not Core 2 ) with 512MB RAM, and of course the 128MB X1600. I plan on buying the $2,000 15" MacBook Pro, but I have two questions. First of all should I go with the glossy screen, or the standard? I'm thinking standard because everything will just generally look different to me than everyone else on the net. I'm also wondering, how much of a performance boost will I see going from 512MB RAM to 1GB (Possibly upgrading to 2GB later on), and having a 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, rather than a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo? asap18 Posted April 2, 2007 Share Posted April 2, 2007 There should be a pretty significant increase in performance, in addition that you can put 3 GB ram in it as well as it being 64 bit. OSXtasy Posted April 3, 2007 Share Posted April 3, 2007 I got a glossy '15inch. I personally like the glossy better, but I think its a personal preference for anyone making the purchase. You may want to go to a local department store that has any laptops on the shelf, and look at matte vs. glossy (although it may not be a Mac, it would still give you a reference point), before you make the decision and order. I already had an HPZD8000 (hackintosh) with glossy WXGA '17 before I bought my MBP glossy '15, so I knew I liked glossy better. Matte screens seem to get cruddy looking (my experience with my desktop 19 and 20 inch matte LCD pc monitors) faster with handling and everyday usage in my opinion, although they all come clean with a little bit of care (and using the appropriate designed "low alcohol" wipes) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

There is OTOH a script that comes with OSX (even hacked versions) that emulates a PC screen for the times that you want to see how everybody else is seeing things. However, I travel a lot and use the computer outside, so the gloss would just be a {censored} as it would reflect everything. If the glossy screen would work where you plan to use it, then by all means go for it. glossy is better, it just has many disadvantages to go with the advantages. Weebs Posted April 4, 2007 Author Share Posted April 4, 2007 I probably won't be using my MacBook outside of my house except to go to LAN Partys, and when I'm in my house it'll most likely by in my room and I tend to have my light off a lot to keep my room cooler in the spring/sumer. I'll mostly be using the laptop for just basic instant messaging, web browsing, and gaming. I'm excited to see how sexy it looks running games, Apple makes some kickass displays IMO. Synaesthesia Posted April 5, 2007 Share Posted April 5, 2007 You won't see a big difference, maybe the cpu is 20 to 30 % faster than your iMac, but the iMac has a faster HDD... I had really meant to say 7200. So far on the MacBook I've seen a HUGE performance boost. I love that I'm able to run a 512MB memory Windows XP machine in Parallels, yet not lag in Mac OS X. I also like that with CrossOver Mac I'm getting steady frame rates with Counter-Strike: Source and that I get a great frame rate with Counter-Strike while on my Vista (BootCamp is amazing ) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
