No you should not get a mac. Most of the macs are very expensive take MacBook Pro for example, who would pay around 2000 US $ for that one when you can get a PC laptop with the same specs for around 1000 US $ and you can use 10.4.6 on it without problems if you're picking the right laptop. So get a good PC laptop and just get a Mac Mini if you really want to be 100% sure to run OSX cuz still if the later osx versions aren't cracked you can still play around with 10.4.6 and that's not bad at all.

Or get a MacBook (not pro) as the Speedmark scores aren't significant between them.  And the MacBook is cheaper than Dell.

I did... and it's definitely worth it to me, but I do understand your point... in fact, I second it; a Mini for a first computer to decide whether it's something you really like, because it is quite a bit of money to drop for a switch.  Like my sig says though; once you go mac, you don't go back.

It's not a gaming computer, for intergrated graphics, it's pretty good. Besides, it's only found in cheaper models; Mini, Macbook. You can't expect that kind of quality in a lowest end of models. But I definitely think Apple should go about implementing some serious options and variations between models.  IE I dropped just over 3k for my 15" MBP, a buddy of mine got a MacBook (13.3") with basically the same performance for 1.2k! What the hell?

i bourght a imaee g5 back in march and a love it also hurry and get a powermac becasue tharts the only ibm ppc apple sell now, ppc are better than intel, steve was stupid switching to intel

PPC are better than intel !!! I Guess Steve Jobs and Everyone at Apple must be Stupid and Switched to a Less Powerful CPU.

How do you come to the conclusion that Motorola's PPC Chips are better than Intels. any Facts you can back that statment up with. They are not better, Guess ill have a Stab and just make a statment without backing it up either.  AMD's are Better than Both..

There was an interesting article on the register about how apple was working with a start-up company to manufacturer power compatible chips to replace the motorola/ibm chips. Apparently the CEO thought he had the deal in the bag but was amazed when apple announced they were going with intel.

Dont get a mac.  My experiences with there tech support and relations have been horrible.  My machine is a week 10 MBP and has the most annoying whining sound.  Had it repaired once.  They replaced teh inverter.  machine came back and teh sound was still there.  Sent it in a second time, and this they said the machine was within spec.  Came back, still had the most annoying sound. I am getting the run around about logic boards and normal specifications, and was spoken very rudely to.  They seem to be adamantly denying any reports of logic board revisions.  I call them last week, and both levels of tech support said it was most likely due to a logic board issue, but today, every single technician or specialist I've talked to is heavily denying logic board problems.  I feel the 5/20 day did more trouble than help.  I don't know what to do anymore.  I'm sending it in a third time, hopefully there spiffy little sound detectors can indicate there is a noise issue.  "within specs"--  Whoever coined the phrase deserves to be shot.  Any sound which gives me a headache should not be within specs.

From that article, it sounds like the company simply wouldn't have had the processors ready when Apple would have wanted them.  They won't even have dual core 2.0 Ghz chips ready for sampling until later this year!

@ badg2k: While your experience may have been less than stellar, Apple's tech support pretty consistantly ranks at the top of the industry.

If you bought a brand new first-run MBP like me, guess what? We are essentially the BETA testers, but the "whine" you refer to shouldn't ever be a problem on a performance laptop so I'm going have to suggest that you get used to it, excessive heat would be something to complain about in a laptop though.

I've been buying Mac's for quite some time; I wouldn't based your opinion on this Apple experience.

Your bad experience might have something to do with asking for a fix where there isn't an Apple problem...
if Apple says 100 degree Celsius is fine, then guess what? it's fine... they're liable anyways...
if Apple says the noise is normal, then guess what? the noise is normal.

You don't complain about Lotus having louder engine noise than a Honda... so don't spout about the money you spent, you got what you paid for.

Well, I don't see any Speedmark scores from AMD processors, but Macworld's Speedmark scores show the corrent crop of PowerMac G5's (IBM, not Moto) outperforming every other system.  Go PPC!

There was excessive heat, and the noise is not from performance like it would be from a Lotus.  Whenever the processor works harder it gets softer.  This is bad engineering, and they shouldnt have released the product this early.  Apple should fix the early mbp's and stop denying the problems by reducing the tolerance on specifications.

my macbook pro has the whine. i sent it in for repairs and should ghet it back firday. i absolutely love it, and i will probably keep on buying macs. they just work, and you dont have to install anti spyware programs and you dont have to know the terminal like the back of your hand. it is what a computer should do.

Not completely accurate.  Yes, Motorola made all of the chips (the 68000 series) in the classic Macs, but the chips in PowerPC Macs were a collaberation between Apple, IBM, and Motorola.  Up until the G3, IBM and Motorola both manufactured the chips.  The G4 was almost exclusively made by Motorola (now Freescale), and the G5 was exclusively made by IBM.

at work I use premiere pro 2, after effects 7. I use only macs and final cut at home, I wish I could use final cut at work *sigh*. Both premiere and final cut are amazing awesome systems and if you cant work in one than you dont know what you are doing. We have amazing technology any more but that does not make up for talent. That being said why do I use macs at home? Well I like them better but that big thing is core audio, I do alot of pro audio work and nothing on the windows side is as good, ASIO is close but not quite.

Macs just seem more fun, so get one!

there is obviously something brilliant about editing video on Macs, since virtually everyone at NYU film school (the best film school in the world) uses a Mac and either FCP or Avid to edit their films. Of course, what do people like Soderbergh and Ang Lee know?
