To switch on full view, in the Terminal type:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder
You can toggle by switching TRUE to FALSE

Sorry, what exactly does this do? "Show all files" doesn't really explain much...

Well, if you're looking for a quick and easy way to change settings you can't change in the System Prefences get OnyX:

TinkerTool is also a good one, but OnyX has more options...
