Just for the info, Digitimes has a poor track record of accuracy in predicting all things Apple. So with that assurance over the shoulder...the lastest news coming from them is that Apple will be unveiling new iPods...flash based ones that is:
Apple is said to be about to unveil its NAND flash-based iPod video in late September, which may aggravate the currently observed NAND flash shortages, according to sources at Taiwan-based component makers.
The new iPod video will use NAND flash as the major storage media, and will have a storage density of 16GB, according to the sources. With the launch of the new iPod imminent, together with the recently reported power outage experienced by Samsung Electronics at its fabs, component makers are concerned that overall NAND flash supply may be impacted.
Furthermore:
The component makers said present demand for NAND flash is relatively slow in Europe while demand in China has been suppressed by recent memory smuggling probes. Supply, on the other hand, is said to be in trouble as leading chipmakers are still striving to enhance yields upon moves to advance process technology, they commented.
Tight supply is expected to be eased after mid-September when fresh capacity comes on board, however, the recent production issues at Samsung's fab suggests there may be uncertainty ahead, the component makers said.
Whether or not Samsung's shortages is related to Apple is yet to be confirmed, as they are one of the major suppliers of NAND flash modules.
