I have done exactly what you are talking about. I had Windows XP installed previously on a hard drive. I used Acronis to create a new Primary Partition out of the free space. Then you just use your leopard install disc [i used Kalyway] and when the graphical install starts go to utilities>disk utility and format the partition [Label it MacOSX or something similar to distinguish it just in case when you create the partition] that you will use for Mac. Format type should be Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). It shouldn't take long to erase and then just install using the instructions provided with your install. However, in my case I did encounter the problem where upon finishing of install, when I reboot I can't boot anything if my leopard disc isn't inserted. If it is inserted, I can only boot Leopard. For this case, it is recommended to use Grub [Google it] BootLoader. I'm not too sure on the how-to of GRUB and therefore haven't been able to get it to work (an incompatible mouse doesn't really help :)).

All in all, it will work perfectly. Just make sure that everything is supported before you install and use GRUB Bootloader in case you encounter that problem

The fastest way to dual boot Xp and leopard is to

1. use live cd(or any program that allows you to resize partitons) and resize your windows partition into 2.(only needs to be done if you didn't already set aside space on HD for mac osx)

2.In windows, use the run prompt and put in "diskpart"

3.Type "list disk"disk"

Type "select disk (number)" (choose the disk that you want to install on)

"create partition primary id=af" (if you want to set the a size just add it in MBs Size=###)

"list partition"

"select partition" (which ever one was just created)

"active"

4.Reboot into the mac osx install disk.

under utilities go to disk utility.

use it to reformat the af partition to mac os extended(you can have it journaled or regular it doesn't matter)

5.Install mac os to disk you just made. not for getting to go into the customize menu before the install and choose the boot loader and patches that best suit your system.

6.After the install is finished go to disk utlity again.(if you dvd drive doesn't read that fast and your worried about it restarting. click the menu tp the right of utlities and click on log. while log is up timer doesn't go down)

7.On the disk that you just installed run repair disk permissions.

8.Reboot. it will now be using the bootloader that you choose when you installed. and it will have choices like disk0s1(windows install) and disk0s2 (leopard install) from there boot into leopard and everything should be working.

The process takes about 30 minutes depending on how fast the install disk loads and installs. sreformatting the disk in windows tasks all of 2 minutes max.)

My dualboot.

Hdd 400Gb

1st partition: leopard 50gb

2nd part: XP 50gb

3rd part: documents 300gb

First install XP, then I used Hirens'cd and one of the program for partition (dont remember which one) to set XP partition inactive. Restarted computer with kalyway dvd and installed leopard to 1st partition.

Dualboot works ;)

Hi,

I installed OS X but till now I can t boot to the OS. I wish to know what is the role of these lines:

3.Type "list disk"

Type "select disk (number)" (choose the disk that you want to install on)

"create partition primary id=af" (if you want to set the a size just add it in MBs Size=###)

"list partition"

"select partition" (which ever one was just created)

"active"

Because I have already a partition for my OS X which is Logical. I have only one Primary partition which contains the Win XP.

Thanks

This isnt really a hard thing to do.

The instructions above should already have you up and running. :)

if anyones interested I have a quad boot setup I could write up a how to.

I am running x64 xp pro, x86 (32 bit) vista, osx and ubuntu.

FYI The easiest way to get these setups to work is using acronis os selector.

So near and yet so far :D can someone help?

I followed the guidance of marcx987 which went almost as described but ended up with the same problem as huntedfuzz in that leopard won't boot without the DVD in the reader.

What I have:

Advent 4211 (msi wind), 120GB HDD with 3 partitions 1-XP 30GB, 2-user 60GB(ntfs,) 3-configured osx 30Gb, as per marcx987's guide.

After install of Kalyway, I rebooted from dvd and repaired permissions as per the guide. On reboot partition 3 is still active, but reports 'missing operating system'

with the dvd in the reader leopard runs just fine.

Any help would be truly appreciated, as its not practical to carry an external reader and dvd when I travel ;)

regards

Dave
