There is no difference in supported resolutions between the models. I believe the mini-DVI port is single-link only which limits both to 1920x1200@60Hz. This is a just a physical port issue (stupid choice by Apple?). I would also recommend getting the older plastic 20" iMac with an S-IPS LCD panel which is worth more than twice as much as the junky TN panel in the new 20" iMac.

The amount of VRAM hasn't mattered since cards got to 16MB or more, at least for just displaying an image. 1920x1200 only takes 9.2MB for 32 bit. The large amounts of memory these days is used for textures and other 3D related stuff.

I would also recommend an S-IPS display but if you want one of those, you're going to have drop nearly 2500 on the 24 inch clunker. That is the only Apple display aside from the Cinema HD displays to have S-IPS. Even the MB/MBP screens are TN as putting an S-IPS display in a laptop would just result in high power consumption. Hence, all the laptop screens use dithering to try and simulate the 16.7 million colours of a 24-bit display.

Even S-IPS looks like junk next to a nice Trinitron CRT. The pixels should at least be a little less visible on the 24" iMac LCD. Apple should license ClearType from Microsoft because that really helps LCDs.

I wouldn't say it would look like junk but it wont look as good as the CRT. However, it is still going to look a lot better than a 20 inch TN panel. In addition, lets not forget the differences in thickness :( (it's one tradeoff for another)
