Hi all,

I'm totally new to the hackintosh thing, although I've used macs for years. But I couldn't afford to shell out multiple thousands for an intel based mac to run certain programs that I have to run. So through some poking around I discovered this amazing forum that you guys are partipating on, I got motivated, and so I built my first computer from scratch. This computer:

intel badaxe 2 revision 5

xfx nvidia 7900 gtx

Q6600 quad core

4 g ram

2 x 36gig WD raptors (the newer adsf ones)

a sata dvd player

coolermaster tower

I saved some money by buying most of this stuff used off of craigslist. The parts seem to function properly, the fans in the coolermaster all work, and then I try to install the Kalyway 10.5.1 that I downloaded.

I turn the computer on, it starts booting and theres a flash of an intel screen for about a second, and then text appears:

Marvel 88SE61xx Controller - BIOS VERSION 1.1.0.34

scanning controller....

Adaptor 1

Arrays Information:

no array is defined

Discs Information:

no disc is defined

Press control plus m to go into marvel bios

press space bar to continue

there is three seconds of black and then this pops up

Intel® Boot Agent GE v1.2.28

copyright 97-05 intel corporation

Inter® Boot Agent PXE Base Code (PXE-2.1 build 085)

copyright 97-06, Intel Corporation

initializing and establishing link.....(a good healthy pause here) and then

PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, check cable (i checked the two sata cables running from dvd and drive, and replaced them as well)

PXE-MOF: Exiting Intel Boot Agent

No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

I load the Kalyway disc image that i burned into the dvd player, press a key, and it repeats the 2nd part after the black, the intel boot agent and onward part, and prompts me to again insert boot disk and press any key. At this point the dvd light does blink on and off a few times, and then this prompt re-appears

initializing and establishing link.....

and then back to

PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, check cable (i checked the two sata cables running from dvd and drive, and replaced them as well)

PXE-MOF: Exiting Intel Boot Agent

No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

I currently only have one raptor drive installed. They were both new in the package from the guy I bought them from. They haven't been formatted. Eventually I'd like to have xp on one drive and osx on the other, although I'd be happy running osx right now.

So please can someone help me. I really feel somewhat lost here. I tried to tweak a few bios settings to get the dvd to be reading as something other than iede, which it seems to default to. I'm starting to suspect that maybe the dvd player doesn't work properly, although it opens and closes and the light blinks. But it never really seems to kick in.

Thanks very much in advance for your comments.

EDIT: sorry that this post is so long. Just thought a complete picture would be more helpful. Cheers

If you did the job well with the jumper settings (I do not know) and still you receive that message, try reburning your disc at a lower speed and verify the data.Your system is just not finding any drive to boot from...

PXE Boot is trying to boot over the LAN. Disable LAN Boot ROM in the BIOS.

Set your SATA mode to AHCI, looks like nothing is defined on the SATA controller.

If still issues with boot, Try connecting the DVD Drive to First SATA port.

Thanks for the replies so far guys! So I'm unsure about the jumper settings. You mean just switch the jumper and try again right? Sorry for the assinine questions here, I feel like I'm back in kindergarden....but everyone's got to start somewhere.

So after following your instructions ajal, the system no longer gives me the media error message. However, it went to black for a few seconds after the old prompt of entering the marvel bios or pressing space bar to continue, and then

the top of the screen then shows the single line

"no bootable device--insert boot disk and press any key"

After doing this with the kalyway disc with no success, I decided to download and burn the Leo4Allv2 and try that as well. Nothing works.

I also turned off all unnecessary stuff in the bad axe 2 bios.

Please help me getting this thing going! I can't figure out (no big surprise) what I'm doing wrong here.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, it still says it's not seeing a hard disk in the opening salvo of info. In the boot bios menu on the bad axe 2, the order of boot follows the screen order from top to bottom correct? I can't figure out if it can't read the disk in the dvd player, or if the dvd player doesn't work properly. I also disabled automatic mode in the drive configuration menu in order to enable the sata, but also selected the configure sata as ahci option, as per ajal.

Also, discs were both burned at single speed and the dvd player is in sata port 0. Discs read fine on another computer as the iso and the rar files respectively.

Alright now this is getting to me. So I couldn't get past the previous problem, so I figured that I would install a legit version of XP pro and also install the second harddrive. I reset all the bios features to install xp, then I formatted the second disk as fat32. Now when I reset the bios to see the sata as ahfi, and unplug the xp drive, i get through to the boot menu. When I type in 'vanilla' I get the following screen

Darwin/x86 boot v5.0.132

4094MB memory

VESA v3.0 256MB (NVIDIA) btw i have a 512 meg card

Loading Darwin/x86

EBIOS read error: Error 0xbb

Block 9054040 Sectors 64

This part gets repeated......please help!!! I'm at a loss for what to do next. Maybe try Leos4all?

Thoughts and suggestions please!!!!!

EDIT: when I type in -v -x cpus=1 i get

Loading Darwin/x86

Loading kernel mach_kernel

Loading HFS+ file: [mach_kernel] from 4230480

Loading HFS+ file: [mach_kernel] from 4230480

EBIOS read error: Error 0xbb

Block 8939984 Sectors 64

EDIT2: when i try this with leos4all i get to the boot menu, where it gives me the option of choosing the startup volume

hd(144,0) Ethernet PXE client. NOTE: that's the only choice i get.....am i correct in thinking that the volume should be the second drive that i reformatted to FAT32? How do I get it to show that? By just turning off the ethernet in the bios?

It also says

Press Enter to start up Darwin/x86 with no options or you can:

type -v and press enter....

type?

boot:

I then type -v and get this statement

system config file '/com.apple.Boot.plist' not found

EDIT 3: i get these commands with both leo4all and the osx86 disk

$599 gets you a mini and for 1,100 you can get an iMac.....just tell the truth you don't want to spend any money.

Your right! You should spend 3,000 Euros to run a 199euro program when you can buy a better rig for 2.6k and save 400 and for otherthings:P

Dude, first off I'm struggling to make films that matter. I'm not swimming in money here.....

Second, in Canada a mini will run you about 900 after taxes and 1500 for an imac. Third, those computers aren't nearly fast enough for what I'm trying to do, which is run a program to transcode very high quality and size images into smaller ones. Hundreds of thousands of them. Two hours of footage is roughly 150,000 images. I have many hours of footage. So sorry if you don't believe me, but that's the way it is. I'm building this system to make sure the osx hack is stable for what I want to do, and then I'll build an 8core server system (also for very little money) to do this job. If I could throw money at this problem, like many of the people in film and television do, then I'd be making the kind of garbage that ends up on television. I don't have any money because I quit playing that game. And you've seen the projects I've worked on on a number of major U.S. and European broadcasters. So welcome to a slice of the life of an independant filmmaker. And it would be nice if you could perhaps give me a little advice on how to proceed, if you decide that I'm not full of {censored}.

Peace

Okay so now I've downloaded iakos as well. Could someone at least tell me what bios settings they have for a successful install on bad axe 2? I've researched a lot on this site, and it seems like the problems I'm experiencing don't have solutions.....anyone, anyone?
