best damn motherboard where everything works? sustainability question for after 10.4.5? what processor? thankful for advice

hey guys

i wanna build a really fast osx86 mac. it should be cheap though, too, so what motherboard should i get? since i don't know much about computers, it would be cool to have one that works pretty much out of the box. money is also a thing, it should not be too expensive, so i don't know, maybe amd processors would be a smart choice as well?

also the sustainability is a big thing. i guess nobody knows what apple is about to pull in the future, so what do you think is the best motherboard for right now (10.4.4) and for the future?

or what motherboard is the majority of people buying that build their own macs? (so i can get "support" if i have problems, hehe...)

and since i wanna use it for audio editing/music production, is there anything special i have to take into account?

also, the graphics should work nicely but are not priority. audio is the priority.

so, can you name a motherboard where basically everything works? i checked the HCL but i don't get smart out of that....

please, if you are an expert, give your advice what's the best value (motherboard) for building a fast osx86 mac with maximum compatabiliy/working out of the box.

edit: if i might get stuck on 10.4.4 or 10.4.5 it wouldn't be too much of a problem either.

thanks, simon

Somewhere, on some forum, some loser is laughing thinking anyone here bought this story. They didn't.

excuse me, what exactly is your problem? i guess we better stick to the topic here, because my question is legitimate and might be of interest to many others.

anyone?

When it comes to hardware, there's rarely anything that's both fast and cheap. There are already some helpful threads with people posting new osx86 systems they built. You might want to seek those posts out.

i see you have an amd processor. let me just ask you: what would you buy, if you could start from scratch? would you buy amd again, and if so, what processor?

simon

The most compatible: Intel 915gux or better yet Intel 945gtplkr. Everything works. Buit in graphis/sound/firwire/ethernet.

Motherboard Intel 945gtplkr $117 (ebay for $117)(all other prices via Pricewatch)

Case: $30

Intel: Pent D 820 $200 (dual core 2.8 ghz)

Memory: 1gig -$61

Pioneer DVD 110 - $39

HD - SATA 250G - $80

Floppy - $10

Fan - $30

Shippling est. $30

Total - $597 - Not bad for a fully working -fast- box.

Absolutely, you need to make sure that whatever special hardware features or PCI cards you need work. In particular, audio output (like video) continues to be a problem on OSx86. I am not sure if anyone has verified that 5.1 works on the SigmaTel 9220 (common on Intel boards) and the audio output comes off the wrong jack. Furthermore, I know that the SigmaTel 9223 (supports digital optical audio (S/DPIF) output on the Intel "media series" boards) has been reported not to work.

Do your audio hardware homework and don't assume anything is going to work.

The cheapest, most stable machine, and in fact the only one machine to run OS X with audio editing and music production is MacBook Pro.

It's so far the only machine that report working on the Optical Digital Audio port.

The video seems to work flawlessly now, but I very carefully selected my hardware to make sure it would. I will probably get a real graphics card, once people here get one working right.

I have basic stereo output, but it comes off the blue jack not the green one. I have not tested the audio system, so who knows what else is screwed up. Otherwise, it works fine and if that's all you need than you should be safe with an on-board SigmaTel 9220 (but note that some people have had issues getting them to work with 10.4.4).

hey bofors,

do you have any audio editing software to test whether the system can stand multitrack sound editing?

from what i've heard around the forum - you were right - audio seems to be e big problem (crashing when multitracking and so on, due to a lack of audio acceleration or sumpin).

simon

I've found that audio comes out the right jacks on my ASUS A8N-SLI deluxe motherboard, but since I don't do a lot of intensive stuff, I don't know how it stands up to that

I agree w/ snowmen though, if you really want to do intensive stuff w/ osx, buy a macbook pro
