ed_c
Built my Intel frankenmac, quite astonished as to how simple its been made with the generous time of others. Got one real issue and that is the amount of noise coming out of my GeForce 7600GT, its pretty annoying, and I can't imagine this fan has a life much over a thousand hours running at full pelt the whole time. Is there any software solution to getting speed control on this fan. My card is Nvidia branded so hoped it would work out the box - however it required the inject driver to get QE, etc. Apologies if this has been asked before I'm struggling with the boards search. Thanks Ed Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/93533-graphics-cards-and-fans/ Share on other sites

My card is Nvidia branded so hoped it would work out the box - however it required the inject driver to get QE, etc. No doubt 7600 and 8600 nvidia cards are low-end junk, I just got a XFX 8600GT with a 2 wire fan that runs full annoying all the time. In Windows there are apps to control video card fan speeds for some cards. The real solution is just to swap out the cooler for something bigger. Companies sell fan-less heatsinks designed for these cards. However, I will just modify a cheap CPU heatsink for my 8600GT. I have a OEM P4 heatsink for my much hotter X800GTO that works okay without the fan. Check out the video card section of SilentPCReview.com for more information. ed_c
The Leopard graphics update fixed it! Fairly late in the boot cycle something now takes control of the nvidia fan and slows it down to a quiet humm. Excellent! hecker
If you have basic soldering skills, you could also consider modding your fan to make it temperature regulated. It's really not that hard and cheap too. Cheers, hecker PS: Here's one way to do it: http://www.webx.dk/oz2cpu/pcmod/fan-reg.htm I believe you could also buy a unit like this.
