Cubric
Which one is better, WD My Book (glossy finish) or the Maxtor? Both 500gb. both have good reviews. though WD is a few pounds more. Sabr
By "the Maxtor", do you mean this one? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Maxtor-Touch-Firew...e/dp/B000CSJ2EU Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90751-im-torn-between-external-hdds/#findComment-647935 Share on other sites
Dermatea
For the price, I would choose neither. A better drive than both of them would be this: http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-301110U-FireWi...5310&sr=8-1 But if you must choose between only those two, I'd go with the WD. SticMAC™
Look at the ELEMENTS drives also, they are cheaper and have the same drive inside! If you take them out of their casing to put in you machine, it's easier than to take the My Book apart! SticMAC™
Elements drives come in 2.5" so you can take it out and once you have put it in your MPB you can put the old one in the casing! CLEVER HEH?? SticMAN hehehehe... How am I going to fit a 3.5" in a MBP? Regarding the price, its a tad expensive than the other two. but I dont really mind. SticMAC™
Maybe this will also do, I have one of the older versions! http://www.newertech.com/products/externalhd.php What makes it nice it looks like a Mac Mini and it gives me extra 3 x USB's 3 x Firewires with a cooling system! Although mine is an older one the NAS version looks COOL! debianx
IMHO I'd say the WD over the MAxtor. I lost my faith in Maxtor a long time ago. Dermatea
Its this one. http://www.amazon.co.uk/MAXTOR-ONETOUCH-Ex..._sbs_ce_title_1 This one has six ONE-star reviews!! Out of six!!! I've lost my faith in LaCie after reading the reviews. And the reviews were bad. Riiiiiight. Then why would you even consider the Maxtor? Cubric
Ive actually been doing research for the past few months and most feedbacks from LaCie users had problems with their 500gb HD. The lower capacity has not much problems, but its the 500gb ones. Customers had it for a few months and it broke down. And there were many complaints. As for the Maxtor one Touch, so far so good. Thats why I considered it. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90751-im-torn-between-external-hdds/#findComment-649271 Share on other sites

Proteo
As for the Maxtor one Touch, so far so good. Thats why I considered it. Really? Have you read the reviews at Amazon? They're tough. Maxtor drives have always been quite inconsistent for me, avoid them if you can. Cubric
Alright. Yup, the review is not as good even in Newegg unfortunately. customers complained about the HD being slow to start up after idling at some site that I researched. I was going through buffalo and freecom as well, but it seems that I'll be over budget if I would go for those two.
