I know there is adium, and I know Leopard comes with iChat. I get it. Thank you, let's move on. I want to use Pidgin. Piding is open source, nice, and I use it with Linux and Windows, I want to be consistant. I have scoured the web, and still haven't found a reliable way to install Pidgin onto Leopard. So I turn to you to help me out. I'm sure some of you have done it, or know how to. I would really like to join you.

For your information, I have an HP laptop running Kalyway's vanilla Kernel. I don't know if this matters or not. I think I have MacPorts installed, but it would be nice if you included how to make sure I have the newest version. Thank you very much!!

Hmmm, this is stupid. I get this error:

ethan-micks-mac-pro:~ ethanmski$ sudo port install pidgin +quartz +no_x11

Password:

Error: Unable to execute port: invalid command name "configure.ccache"

Ugh, I swear I installed macports. I know I have. Could someone quickly guide me through it so I know that I have it installed on Leopard? If so, thanks!

Thanks, well, I installed Macports easily enough, and ran "sudo port selfupdate" and it worked. So I'm sure it is on. However, I tried: sudo port install pidgin +quartz +no_x11

and got:

ethan-micks-mac-pro:~ ethanmski$ sudo port install pidgin +quartz +no_x11

@ sg, that is what I thought it looked like too, but I definitely recall installing xcode. However, my installation broke, and I reinstalled, using my backup from Time Machine (finally came in use). So maybe it died after that. I'm reinstalling all of xcode, and I'll give an update after that. Thanks for helping!

Alright, and Update. I have Xcode and Macports both fully installed. I did:

"$ sudo port install pidgin +quartz +no_x11"

and got pretty far, until this point, in which I got:

---> Fetching gtk2

Error: Please uninstall or deactivate the cairo port and reinstall it by running `port install cairo +quartz`.

Error: Target org.macports.fetch returned: cairo must be installed with the quartz variant enabled.

Error: The following dependencies failed to build: gtk2 intltool gnome-common libao nspr nss

ethan-micks-mac-pro:~ ethanmski$ sudo clean cairo +quartz

sudo: clean: command not found

ethan-micks-mac-pro:~ ethanmski$ sudo port install cairo +quartz

---> Fetching cairo

---> Verifying checksum(s) for cairo

---> Extracting cairo

---> Configuring cairo

---> Building cairo with target all

---> Installing cairo 1.4.14_0+quartz

Error: Target org.macports.activate returned: Image error: Another version of this port (cairo @1.4.14_0) is already active.

Error: Status 1 encountered during processing.

As you can see, I tried to install cairo as it asked, but it said I already had it insatlled... wierd. I'm going to try just a plain "$ sudo port install pidgin" and see what happens.

Scratch all that, I got Pidgin installed. Just plain ol' "$ sudo port install pidgin"

However... now that It is installed, I still have some complaints. First of all, can I put it into my dock? If so, how? Right now, the only way I can get it to run is by searching for it and running the Unix Exectutable, so hints to that would be really useful.

Also, when I run it, I get the terminal coming up, and I was curious if I could not have that happen as well. Thank you for all your help! You got Pidgin to work for me!

Edit: How do you update?

Sorry, the only ports programs I use in os x run in terminal. Never had a reason to add one to the dock. Maybe someone else can help with that.

Update?

"sudo port -v selfupdate" to update the ports tree.

"port outdated" to list outdated ports.

"sudo port upgrade <portname>" to upgrade the specific port.

@Embio~ I have nothing against Adium. For the small amount of time that i have used it, It hasn't done anything wrong. However, I like to be consistant, hense, I use Firefox on all 3 OS's rather than Safari in Leopard. Also, it was a challenge, and I completed it with the help of vaporATX. Thank you!

These links may help with the dock launcher issue:

There has to be a slicker way to do this, I'm just not finding it.
